14 vs 15

I looked them up in my S&W book and it looks to me like the identity crisis goes way back. The trigger, hammer, trigger backstop, and lockwork options were always available on both up until recent years. That leaves the barrel as the only real difference and I've seen more than one Model 14 barrel on a Model 15. In the six inch barrel, the Model 14 barrel top rib is barrel width while on the Model 15 barrel it's narrower.

S&W never did make too much sense with some of their model designations. Six inch Model 19s almost always have a Patridge front sight, what's a "Combat" Magnum doing with a Patridge sight? Why is a 44 mag a 29 while a 41 Mag is a 57 but you can get a model 25 in two different chamberings?
