In a month I get my money to go to school and I will have quite a bit left over for a rifle. I am debating the S&W sport 15 AR or the Pioneer sporter AK. The smith is 560, the AK is 470. Both have fair reputations as being decent quality for the price and both are extremely modular. Which do you think I should get? I am leaning towards the Smith sport but I am unsure. Thoughts?

I would get the smith. It is known for being really good american made and a warranty backed by a company with great customer service. The AR is also a more ergonomic and should be more accurate than the AK.

If it was me I wouldn't buy guns with my money to go to school, that is the reason many people coming out of college are saddled with all kinds of debt, waiting to get a job with the piece of paper they just received.

But.......that's not the question you asked (i was just giving some friendly advice, take it for what it's worth)

Between the two guns I think it's a no brainer to pick the AR-15 over the AK.

I AGREE with your WHOLE post! The first half is WAAAAAY more important than the second...

This is bonus money, school is completely paid for and I have quite a bit left over to do what I want with it. If my saving holds up (after the purchase of course) I should have somewhere around 15,000 after I graduate in the bank.

Just graduated myself and I'd agree that you should save. That being said I bought and sold a lot of guns in college... I'd get the AK. I've never got the appeal of ar's and ak's are a ton of fun. If I'm shooting further than 100 yards it's usually a bolt gun and under 150 ak's are plenty accurate.

Tough call. I think everyone needs one of both. But me, I'd get the AK now. Then later when you've hopefully got more money to throw around, you can choose from a much wider variety of ARs. Dont read as me knocking the M&P Sport, they have a great rep and I dont doubt they deserve it - I just mean lots of AR buyers ultimately want something more customized than a basic AR, I know I did.

Between the two, the M&P. Seen a couple horror stories about the Pioneer Arms Polish build.

You won't find an unhappy M&P Sport owner.

Between AK or AR, it's a toss-up. I prefer AK's, but with the sanctions situation, an AR or AK in .223 would make a lot of sense. The AK market is fragile right now... Ammo is available, but there's a lot more 5.56/.223 floating around locally than 7.62x39.

Thoughts?

Quite a few.....

If you're under 21 you ant buying squat with any left over money.
If you're over 21 you need to get you're priorities straight real quick.

I suggest during registration signing up for Econ 101. Might give you more insight on dealing with money you don't have than a gun you don't have.

Edit... Reread post #7 by the OP. It your money. Get the AR.

I'm sure if OP wanted condescending life advice, he'd have stated it somewhere in his post.

^^^^ augh.... Perhaps you didn't read the edit I made before you posted or you would have included it In your post.
If not.... That was FAST posting.... If you did and I offended either the OP or you in any way please accept my humble apology for the condescending life advise.

I'm gonna buck the trend and say Pioneer Polish AK for purely selfish reasons.

IO doesn't have a very good reputation, but I've heard some good things about the Pioneer rifles, and the price looks nice, so I would love to see some more user feedback.

S&W Sport all the way.

People forget that AR's now are at the cheapest they have been in a while. That AR you buy for under $600 might be worth $1k in a year or 2.

And there are far better AK's out there than the Pioneer. N-Pap's for one, and the Centurion39.

The pioneer arms rifles are not getting good reviews and their importer is less than reputable. I would suggest a different AK pattern rifle.

The sport but if it is possible you can not go wrong with thishttp://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/colt-ar-15-5-56nato-16-carbine-pencil-barrel.html personally if i wanted a ak i would lean toward the pap
