The look was certainly part of it but the concept centered around getting a really good barrel on an action that was more robust. It's relatively easy to put a premium barrel on a single action, it's just a round tube. A lot more complicated to do so on a double action and make it look right.

There are also conversions floating around that involve Anaconda barrels fitted to Redhawks.
 
The Python's barrels beside the faster twist were burnished or minutely " choked" ( depends on who you talked to but Bill Davis said they were) with a confidential process Colt used in the 60s up thru the early 80s. So the story goes. I have never seen an inaccurate Python barrel. I have seem some lousy S&W barrels , really bad ones since they stopped pinning them especially. The " chemically" done rifling produced some real turds :(
