Took this big doe at 20 yards (running shot) with this Early American .62 smoothbore. The .600", 325 grain ball dropped her like the hammer of Thor. Her feet appeared to be jerked out from under her. Flintlocks are all I've used for years. They really put the sport back in hunting.
 
That`s Great, I am glad to see there are still a few of us that believe in the Art of Primitive firearms hunting, not a modern firearm pushing a bullet with black powder, ie; inlines & electronic ignition. I applaud you Sir. nice White-tail. Congrats.........
 
That is awesome!! Congrats!

Love your flinter and really nice doe. I'm planning on hunting next year with the percussion Hawken .54 my father built.

Granted, it's not a flinter or a smoothie like yours but still BP traditional!

Myamoto, nice deer, great shot! May I ask where you got the gun you used?

I used to own a Great Plains flintlock for PA primative season but there were a lot of things I didn't like about it: weight, hooked butt plate, sights, etc. But your seems to have everything I'm looking for: smoothbore for ball or shot, shotgun butt plate, simple design. I'm intrigued.
 
Nice I just bought my Hawken to go deer hunting with next year. I've never been and can't wait to give it a try. My buddy had a scope on it but I have removed it so I can use it as intended.
 
Gunboat57, That nice smoothie was built by Matt Avance at TVM(uzzleloading). Matt has built several rifles for me but this was my first smoothbore. I have two favorite percussion rifles that have earned their stripes in the woods. It's just that for quite a few years now I've hunted with nothing but flint. The capguns do see range time, however.
 
Way to go, Myamoto! I, too, have used nothing but flintlocks for well over 30 years. And, being recently retired from forest and wildlife management work, I've done a bunch of culling for clients over the years and use nothing but my flintlocks....got about a dozen of 'em!

Use a good quality flintlock, well tuned, and with double-set triggers, and you're hooked for life! A patched round ball will produce a hellova wound channel....right?
 
Aww, man. I thought this was about making a delicious drink by running venison through a blender. ;)
I can't wait to get a deer with my .50 flinter.
 
Congratulations on a fine hunt!

By any chance is the sling on your flintlock from The Leatherman? It really looks nice on that gun.

Cool! I've been thinking about picking up a .62/20ga Trade Gun to play with and perhaps try my luck with next years BP deer season.
