For me the best is the .22lr Diamondback (I prefer the 4" barrel)
Usually Rare and Valuable go together...So I'm thinking a 6" Python chambered, and marked, .38 Special.
A slightly more available model would be the 3" Combat Python

As far as Best, Most Valuable, and Rarest go.
It's not as which one of the snakes fits what catagory above, but which sub species fits each catagory ?
The Boa is one of the hardest to find and is usually that last slot for people to fill when collecting at least one of each of the snake series.
A matched set of NIB Boas (one 4 inch and one 6 incher) would probably bring around $8000 at auction.
That's pretty pricey. But then again, they only made 600 pairs and there are no variations.
Unlike the Python which you can purchase for about $1500 NIB in a 6 inch blued offering.
You can purchase 50-60 or more variations of barrel lengths, finishes and limited editions of the Python.
The Snake Eyes set for example is bringing in the $5500-$6000 price range.
It contains 2 snubbie Pythons, one Bright stainless and one royal blued.
Colt made just 500 of these sets.
There's the Silver Snake Python and these are all over the map.
The last one I saw sell was for around $5000.
Colt only made 250 of these.
There's the 3 inch Combat Python which brings anywhere from $4000-$5500.
There's the Serpentine Series Python which Colt only made 50 of and the list goes on and on and on.
That's why I said above sub-species.
The cheapeast and easiest snake to get would have to be the Cobra.
It was made for many many years, and minty examples are still plentiful and easy to obtain.

Thanks for the invaluable information, guys. I have a "Snake" set, but see that it needs some filling out. The Boa is my cornerstone, NIB, cylinder never rotated outside of the factory. It's getting more and more expensive to flesh out the collection though.

You can pickup an early 60's Cobra like this one pictured for ~ $600.

With the Snakes, other than the BOA, you are dealing with production variations that make them less common and hence usually more valuable. But what is uncommon? What is rare? But, to name a few and all are factory original rather than something a gunsmith chopped up.... 3" Pythons, 2.5" Diamondback 22's, 6" nickel Diamondback 38spl, any nickel Diamondback 22, any BOA, to name a few. The basic models are generally fairly easy to find. For example, there are gobs of Pythons and Diamondbacks for sale. Anything that costs $3000 and up, I would want a factory letter to verify that it is the same as it came from the factory and nobody changed out a barrel to make it seem like a rare one. Some boxes for these guns might run as much as $1000, but you have to be careful there as there are lots of non-factory marked boxes floating around.

I've acquired three Cobras in 3 months. The .22 with a 3" barrel was much more expensive than the .38s, but I believe there were many fewer of them produced. I like the old style, before the shrouded ejector rod.
It seems a lot of the Cobras may have been carried frequently and fired little. I'm not up for NIB pricing on some of the other models, but I feel like I'm getting a good value for what I want, which is a pretty nice gun that doesn't break the bank.

Those are a stunning set my friend! I'd never seen a Boa until this pic, shows how much I don't know. When were these made and discontinued? Again, beautiful. I have a 6" Python I purchased 26 years ago, still as beautiful as the day she followed me home!

IMO, there's no need to wish for Colt to make small guns if you really want one. There's plenty out there for the pickings. You can easily find a 70's Cobra like this for $350-$600 depending on the condition. The same goes for Agents and Detective Specials, which are basically the same gun.

They were only made in 4 and 6 inch barrels as pictured.
They are MKV frames with Python vent ribbed barrels and Royal Blue was the only finish they came in.
For some reason they don't come up for sale very often. When they do, they bring top dollar.
They are actually a beautiful set.

The information I have states that there were 1200 Boas made for Lew Horton, 600 6" & 600 4" in Royal Blue. 100 of each were in matched sets. Gunkrazy has shown the only "set" that I've seen. I think I'll blow that picture up and pass it around to friends and family as a suggestion for Christmas presents. Santa is real, isn't he?

My only Colt snake gun is a 6" Anaconda in 44 mag. Great gun, it deserves more attention than I can give it.
