Colts are horses and there are many different kinds. So why did Colt end up with the whole snake theme with its revolvers?

It all started with the Python in 1955.

There was a contest inside Colt to name the new gun, and "Python" won.
Since the Diamondback looked like a smaller Python, the Diamondback name seemed appropriate.

Colt just carried through with the snake theme on succeeding models.

While a horse theme might seem more appropriate, I don't quite see a "Clydesdale" or a "Morgan" and a "Jackass" is right out, although a "Burro" might fit a small field gun.

The only reason I'm so smart (?????????) :D

Is because I bought one of the first Cobra's in..... 1950

I must agree with the above.

Also, I would much rather get bit by a python than kicked by a draft. So...

"they're at least easier to remember than Smith & Wesson's illogical model numbers."

That's for sure.
I remember when S&W started assigning those jumbled number ID's to S&W autos.

They actually sent dealers a large wheel-like cardboard device to figure out what they all meant.
