Snub = Backup Only

i don't really see myself ever carrying more than one gun on my person at one time. one on me and one in the car...sure. one on me and one on my wife...absolutely. but carrying two guns at once seems like more trouble than it's worth.

and my current carry gun is a five-shot SP101. if i moved up from that, it would probably be for a commander-sized 1911 (once i actually get one), which really only gives a couple more shots. i have equal confidence in .357 and .45 and even "enough" confidence in .38+p, frankly...

I carry a J frame all the time and it's not just a belly gun. If you like a J frame carry one and don't worry about what others think. They may feel the need for a gun with 17+1 rounds and carry 2 extra mags but just because they feel the need to carry 52 rounds of ammo doesn't make it a necessity. 5 rounds in a revolver plus a speedloader/speedstrip reload is more than enough for "most" SD encounters. (I'm not talking about high risk situations or on-duty needs)

A J frame is a beautiful carry!

There is no need to feel undergunned with a J frame! I most often carry one of three guns, either a S&W 908 9mm with one extra magazine, a S&W 642 with one speedloader, or a Taurus 85 with one speedloader. I feel just as safe carrying my 5 shot .38 as my 8+1 9mm.

Why?

Glad you asked.

I keep situational awareness a priority. I enjoy watching people and figuring out what they are up to. I do not go places that I wouldn't take my family, and I won't take my family anywhere I think is unsafe. Etc, etc, etc. And also,

If the worst happens, once a round or two are fired do you really think that you or the bad guys are going to be standing around shooting it out?? Prolly not, reaction will most likely be to run for cover or flat run away.

Just my opinion.

I only carry one at a time and sometimes it's a 2" 38 Special. It's highly unlikely that any SD situation I would get into during the course of my routine would involve more than one or two subjects. I'm going to the grocery store, not to war. If I knew I had a serious chance of needing to fight a crowd of attackers I would take a rifle.

Actually, I just wouldn't go. :D

Well said Sir!!

I have own 5 snubs in the past and have gotten rid of them for one reason or another I presently carry my 6th now a 642 after going back to a snub after trying other things for awhile to include not carrying a off duty gun. The old modle 60 that i had while in narcotics was carried in the boot not so much as a back up it was just where i carried it. When we did raids it was still in the boot but the bug was a full size beretta as the primary was a MP-5. Now days since i make the mistake years ago and began getting promoted my duty position is normally a desk or attending some meeting, once and awhile the guys ask me to help them with a warrant but i think they do that because they feel sorry for the old man lol. When i'm off is when the 642 go with me very seldom carry a reload. It seem that while it true the goblins like to run in small packs they are normally not armed with firearms but use blades or club had a group that would approch people in parking lots and beat them with tire irons and rob them. I'm sure one or two shots from a snub would of change the outcome. So i carry the snub as primary. I really don't understand the private citizen that carry a full size firearm and a bug not sure what they expect to run into if it is the 2-3 3 armed goblins i'm afraid the odds are with the goblins no matter what you are carrying with the exception of a hand genard. If you one of those that like to be armed to the teeth that fine, if you one that put your snub in your pockect don't worry in the real world you are jsut as well off and may be better as you will be more likly to take it on those short runs to the store where the people that carry the big things may just leave it as home for a short trip.

be safe

I carry a Smith & Wesson Airweight model 638 loaded with Federal Nyclad +P. That's it, and I don't feel like I am inadequately armed for my personal protection.

I'm back to a Jframe 638 after replacing one I had to sell, this being a fervent desire to lighten and simplify. Now equipped with CT 405s, I don't feel at all outgunned with this and 2 speed strips. Add in a Victorinox Farmer and other mundane EDC and it's a light, handy load.
