So how does one successfully CCW in Ohio?

I have a Florida non-res CCW. I understand that (at least according to Packing.org) it is recognized by Ohio. But with the various local laws and ordnances (such as Cincinnati's prohibition on semiautomatic weapons) and the somewhat confusing wording of parts of Ohio's CCW law, it seems like it's almost too much trouble to carry.

How do those of you who do carry in Ohio manage the various rules? Does the CCW law override city ordnances, for instance? I have read Ohio's "Concealed Carry Document" and the AG's FAQ, and just wonder whether anyone here has some easier-to-grok commentary on it.


ETA: You may wonder why I ask. My fiancee is from Cincinnati, and we occasionally enjoy visiting the place. I want to know if I'm committing horrible crimes if I carry there (well, horrible misdemeanors, at least).

My brother in law is a LEO there and when I asked him about the new Ohio law he said "Hell......You won't get two cops to agree what it says OR doesn't say."

We observe them when we can. We obey traffic laws. Concealed really means concealed.

The most F'ed up part of Ohio CCW has to do with being in a car. If you are a CCW permit holder, you may have the loaded gun in the car IF it is either locked in a box, like the glove box, or carried "in plain sight" on your person. You can not drive with the gun concealed on your person. That means, every time you enter your car while carrying, you have to put it in the locked box, or in a holster in plain view on your person. I guess some folks get one of those elastic thigh bands for that purpose.

Other than that, there are lots of places that are restricted. Any govt., court, or LE related building is off limits. If going onto University grounds, you must lock the gun in trunk--can't even keep it locked in your glove box. I think even churches are off limits unless the Pastor expressly allows.

Of course, any place that serves alcohol is out, as is any other private establishment that posts notices at the entrance. That can include entrance to parking lot as well as building itself.

If you are carrying on your person, or in the car, and have contact with LE for any reason, you must immediately disclose your carry status. The LEO may secure your weapon for his safety until the contact is over. Be sure you are carrying your permit, of course.

Hey, at least it's a start. If we get rid of our a-h governor, we might be able to get some carry reforms.

Well, there are some convolutions there, but it seems like the really annoying part is the car-carry part. As far as I can tell, local ordnances (like Cincinnati's ban on semiautomatics) are trumped.

Which is a relief, if you catch my drift.

The Ohio Attorney General has the Ohio Concealed Carry pamphlet on line. It should answer most of your questions, but might create some you didn't think of since the law is so screwed up. You can view it here:

I live in southern WV but "home" is Wheeling in Northern panhandle. I can go thru Ohio or Pa. Pa is 15 min longer. I go thru Pa and always try to stop for gas or something there to spend $ in Pa rather than Ohio. Pa's non-res permit by mail!!!!!!!

Wonder why Ohio is the "Buckeye state"???
