Yeah, I sold off my mods and just used the money to buy a Mossberg 500A. They're so inexpensive, you may as well just get two seperate shotguns. Who knows, you may discover that you're in the Mossberg camp, not the 870.

River, the best advice I can give you is to keep the gun as is with the exception of purchasing an improved cylinder screw choke. Buddy up with an experienced shotgunner or an instructer at your local gunrange. Go slow until you feel confident with handling your shotgun. You then can decide which shotgun diciplines you enjoy and proceed accordingly. You will be pleasantly suprised at the results if you first grasp the fundamentals correctly!
Regarding loads- stick to 1 oz payloads in 8 or 9 shot in the cheap promotional loads. These will suffice until you want to go for performance. WELCOME TO THE RELM OF SHOTGUNS AND GUNNERS! And remember, have FUN! Good luck!

RiverwinIA - Just an FYI. Wingmasters are part of the Reminton 870 family of shotguns which has been around for decades and includes the inexpensive, workallday, Express, different tactical and security configurations, and the Wingmaster. The Wingmaster series has several different grades and models depending on intended use, clays or hunting. As far as the mechanical action goes they all function the same way. The Express is made in huge quantities as an inexpensive gun that can take a beating. Once they roll off the assembly line they're shipped out. Wingmasters on the other hand get a lot of TLC after manufacture. More care is put into selecting the wood and ensuring there are no blemishes. More care is given to the blueing on the metal surfaces. The internal parts are hand checked and finished off so there are no rough edges and the gun operates smoothly the moment you take it out of the box. Wingmasters can often feature standard grade or custom engraving, the stocks and foreend may be special for the intended use or user. Even a more or less generic Wingmaster is an excellent gun and they only get better.

The 870 design was one of the first to use newer, more efficient, less expensive, manufacturing techniques. Before, shotgun actions had many machine honed parts with lots of hand finishing; a fairly expensive, labor intensive process. The 870 mass produced the parts and with the Wingmasters provided the hand finishing to make a smooth operating guns of excellent quality. The 870 design has proven to be the most popular in history and Wingmasters represent the best examples.

Even if your Wingmaster is a basic field grade edition, it will have been made with a much better than average QC going over. They still (romantically) remind people of when companies really cared about their reputation and the products they they put their name on.

I have a 870 express black syn stock and forend.. keep the longer barrel and buy an 18 inch off ebay.. Im 99 % sure the express stocks fit the wingmaster..

Thats funny - 3 years ago my GFs father (now my wife) gave me an 870 Wingmaster 20 ga. w/a 28" barrel.

I don't shoot it much but its a treasured gift.

Just a week ago he took me turkey hunting for the first time (not with the Wingmaster!)

Man, I feel sorry for this guy. He's getting flogged for (crap) advice that somebody else gave.

You guys might (as in should) read his post/questions before responding

1) read the original post

2) re-read the original post because you probably jumped to some unfounded conclusions

3) Engage brain
