Commonly chambered handgun and rifle are in the United States besides .22 Long Rifle.

Basically if we lived in a society where the neighbors came over to borrow a cup of ammo what would they be asking for.

I am thinking something along the lines of...

.38 Special or 9mm for handguns
thutty thutty for rifles.

Hunting cartridges - .30-06 is pretty widespread, since it's seen pretty much as a do-all cartridge.

If you count all the law-enforcement agency guns, then 9mm and .223. Not counting them, probably still 9, maybe .45ACP, and .30-30 with the '06 a close second. Just a guess. Would probably vary greatly depending on reigon.

In civilian hands, no LEO:

Handgun .38 Spl hands down. Lots of 'em sittin' around in bedside tables, in attics, in drawers etc. .45ACP as an easy 2nd

Rifle - no doubt in my mind it's 30-30 (read somewhere that more game has been taken with a 30-30 than any other cartidge out there) with .223 or 30-06 in 2nd place

I have seen lists ordering the top number of ammunition sales for rifles in North American around on the net. I seem to recall they can vary from list to list, but I do know 30-30 and 30.06 were both up high (assuming high ammo sales is reflective of most common chambering, which is probably not a good assumption to make).

4. .243 (a lot of people get .243's for their wives and kids for deer hunting-- so there will be one or so in most houses)

Why not round it out?

2. .410
3. 20 gauge
4. 16 gauge (ask me about my Fox/Savage Sweet 16 bird gun.-- best balance you'll ever feel)

I notice Walmart puts out about the same amount of 30-30 and 30.06 for deer season so I would need to toss a coin for those in the rifle category.

For pistol although I am in the .38 user category, 9mm might be more common.

Frankly, I think 30-30 is probably the most commonly owned gun in the US, but you don't see them in the numbers that you see others here.

I should say this, however. A lot of folks around here have one in the gun safe that they inherited, and they never use it. Because it is something they have only out of family respect and history, I am reluctant to consider it a choice of firearm. Likely, they don't have any ammunition for it in their home.

Around here, the tread is going the same for .38 Special as well. The new pistols purchased are almost always .357 in revolvers and either 9mm,45 ACP, or 40S&W in Auto now.

Ten years ago, I'd guess it was .38 spl/.357 mag and .30-30, no competition. These days, I'd say it's more likely that 9mm, .223, and maybe .45 acp are edging in on the competition. As far as rounds shot for practice, etc. , 9mm and .223 are most certainly in the top qualifiers, and you're probably more likely to find a household with those (or .45acp) available for borrowing a cup of ammo than .38 or .30-30

I imagine 12ga is the most likely cartridge to be found in a house, however.

Get the .357 and also feast on .38
And have a 12 Bore because you can load it to do any grunt job from rabbits to bear.


And of course, 30/30-9mm-.45 ACP-and 20Ga are pretty close in the running, too.
