Brought home my first AK today. It is an Romanina SAR-1. It was a LEO's that was rarely if ever shot. He kept it in his patrol car. I can't wait to get it to the range. Pics as soon as I can get some taken.

Any tips for a new AK owner? Any good web sites realting to the AK?

the best site for SAR owners: http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml

Go get yourself some cheap Ruskie ammo and blast away. I like the stuff that comes in the 700 round "sardine can." Wolf FMJ and HP work fine as well. I didn't like the Silver Bear ammo I tried very much -- it left trails of sparks everywhere, including right in my face!

Don't bother with Chinese "speedloaders." King Kong might get 'em to work, but not us normal strength humans. Get plenty of mags -- you'll need 'em if you want to spend your time at the range/shooting spot shooting, not loading mags. I like the 40 rounders for the RPK.

BTW, before someone else beats me to it, you've really got a semi-auto version of the AKM. But, hey, I generally call my SAR an AK, too.

Now, get a AK-74 and ditch the AK-47...

It's tempting to order a AK-47 (SAR-1) from SOG, they have ones with the bayonet lug and flash hider back on them!

Don't touch and AK-74

or Cur-II or SAR-2.

I had a Cur-II and a Sar-2 before I finally broke down and bought a SAR-1 a while back. I was spoiled by the fast, flat shooting, low recoil 5.45X45 round. Know when I shoot the SAR-1 it just doesn't feel right. Can't explain why though.

I think you'll find you have fun with though, cheap ammo and lots of fun. Once you've done a few mag dumps though keep your hands away from the forward sling attachment, it will be quite warm. Get's me on the SAR-2 and SAR-1 every time it seems.

Personally I like the 30 rounders, or even the 20 rounders from Tapco. Just a little more room when shooting from prone or from a bench. Have fun. You may also want to check out the Ulti-Mak gas tube and some of the Kobra red dot sights for it. Also a Tapco G2 or Red Star Arms Trigger group will do wonder for trigger feel.

Congrats, on getting yourself a nice carbine. The SAR-1 will serve you well. I agree with the others, start picking up some cheap surplus mags from Tapco or a gunshow. I like the 30 rounders, but the 20 can be handy for the range. Also if you got a 40 round mag with the rifle, they are kinda neat. Also pick up one of the cheap East German 4 pocket AK mag pouches from Cheaper Than Dirt. They run about $5.

Red Dot

Hi, Are you going to mount a sighting system ? I mounted a Kobra red dot on mine . Fun shooter ,cheap ammo, and don't believe what Kerry says I will be hunting with this AK this deer season !!! ...........WVleo

You might want to get a LULA mag loader/unloader. Saves much loading time and your fingers. I clean and lube my rifle after every outing. I have almost 12000 rounds through it now, and it shoots just as well as when it was new. You get alot of gun for a little money with that rifle.

VG

I should have been more clear. What I bought is an SAR-1 Romanian AKM clone. Not a true AK-47. Until I become filthy rich this will just have to do.:D
