Yes Longstreet was blind.
I don't recall if he carried regulary but I do recall him using a gun on more than one occasion. He was pretty good at knowing where someone was by sound.
In Magnum Force, while at the departmental match, Clint tells David Soul that he uses a "special light" load in his .44. He never actually says he shoots .44 Special.
I have always envisioned a Michael J Pollard looking fellow in a basement with a Rockchucker loading ammo for Harry one at a time with a jewelers precision. Using something like a soft cast, gas checked, hollow pointed Hensley & Gibbs #740.
