ive spent hours on google trying to figure this one out and havent found anything.

ok, in the movie 'screamers' one of the characters talked about soap in socks. he was talking about lathering up his socks with soap the night before and letting them dry out. then wearing them so it was socks against soap against skin..... and then his buddy cut him off and nothing else was said.

why? what would the benefit be of having dried in soap in the fabric of your socks? is it a military thing? does it cut down on blisters? whats the deal?

i figured the hunting section would have lots of people who hike and might have heard about this.

thanks.

I know soap isnt good if your hunting deer. A guy i used to know would nail bars of soap to trees to keep deer from running into certain areas(i.e. the neighbors woods).

Four years in the infantry.
Twenty years hiking and hunting.
A pretty fair amount of reading on the subject - I even have a few friends who are long hikers, though that isn't my thing personally.

Can't say I've ever heard of lathering socks with soap before wearing them, but that's not to say somebody somewhere doesn't do it.

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHahahahahahahahahahahahaha!... But you can put a bar of soap in a sock to use it as a 'jailhouse sap'.

thank you for the replies.

i just cant figure out why someone would want to soap up their socks and wear em full of soap. it would kill the insulating properties of the socks wouldnt it? so it couldnt be about warmth. would the soap draw away moisture from the skin? its really bugging me that i cant find the answer. ive spent hours on google on more than one occasion trying to look this up. would antibacterial soap keep fungus at bay?

Sounds bogus to me.

i just cant figure out why someone would want to soap up their socks and wear em full of soap.Neither can I. it would kill the insulating properties of the socks wouldnt it? Yes. so it couldnt be about warmth. would the soap draw away moisture from the skin? Probably. Not to mention irritating the skin and causing itching or rash. its really bugging me that i cant find the answer. The answer is, it's Hollywood, not reality. ive spent hours on google on more than one occasion trying to look this up. would antibacterial soap keep fungus at bay? No. Bacteria are not fungi. If you have foot fungi use an anti-FUNGAL preparation such as Tinactin

In short, IMHO, you've already wasted more than enough time & energy on this one. Get thee to thy loading bench, load up some pistol ammo, and go shoot some classic bullseye. That'll get yr mind off the soapy sox.

There is a miltary thing involving soap in a sock... but that's different. :uhoh:

Can't say I've ever heard of this use though.

Never heard of that before. Should be all kinds of foot powders out there that would do the same thing.

When I was a kid, it was common to wet down a pair of boots or skates before you wore them the first time to make them break in faster, but SOAP? I think someone was smoking something...

i had someone answer me in the forum on imdb.com for the movie in question. they said that it was for sealing out water. im not sure how that could even work.

i know ive spent too much time thinking about this, but its slowly become an obsession. i just need to know. every couple of years i start thinking about it and i cant get it out of my head.

Time to light up your reds, boys!

Seriously, it's a (very lousy, sci fi) movie, what did you expect?
