SoCal shooters - ever been to Burro Canyon?

Any impressions of this range?

In a nutshell Lytle Creek is closed this week and i'm looking for somewhere else to go that is pretty fun. I'm looking for another range that:
- Let's you blow up your own targets (bottle's n other stuff)
- Let's you rapid fire
- Doesn't have range masters that are d!cks
- Has rifle range beyond 100yrds
 
I'd suggest using something else for targets, that's explosive, fun and cheap - oranges and apples - instead of "bottles".
Broken glass, propane cannisters, VCRs, TVs, dishwashers - all the other dip???? targets are the reason / excuse that BLM has reduced the number of public lands ranges in the greater L.A. area from ~30 to ~5 in the last 15yrs.
 
Burro Canyon is the rifle range that I frequent the most. It’s an okay range, but don't expect a whole lot. They will not let you shoot trash, i.e. cans, bottles and what not. This is because if the sheriff happens to stop by they will get a stiff fine. As far as rapid fire goes, shoot as fast as you can. The range masters are cool but sometimes I wish were a little harsher, I was there and no one said anything or was looking at the punk kid who was shooting trap with his SKS. I have not measured the distance but it is at the very least 100 yards. Overall it’s an okay range but not amazing. I just wish Prado would open its rifle range up sometime.
 
Tossing trash around isn't exactly good gunmanship. There are plenty of ways to enjoy shooting that don't include littering.


Saltine crackers fly apart nicely, and break down fairly quickly. They're small enough to encourage good marksmanship, too.
 
I cannot htink of any ranges in the socal area that willallow you to rapid fire and shoot your own trash type of targets.
Burro Cyn is the closest you describe as they allow you to shoot other targets than paper.

Angeles Shooting range has a one shot per second type of 'anti-rapid-fire" rule
Fish Cyn San Gabriel Cyn shooting club has at least two roving penisheads as ro at all times.

Hodge road is closed
I would suggest heading out to the desert

Sounds like the same two dips that was always there when I used to shoot at San Gabriel.......I'm very gun safe but these two dips was always hovering around me like vultures.........I guess they dont like EBRs.;)
 
Why not just go and shoot on open public land?
We used to go out by Borrego east of San Diego.

Have they actually closed publicly owned land to you now?

I do this ,well, not as frequently as I would like,out past Mohave in Pine Tree Canyon.Its a great spot but a little bit of a drive.
 
Yup, Lytle Creek was closed because of fire in the area. Once the firefighters are done with the mop up, they should be open. The lady mentioned that the firefighters seemed to have a problem working the hillsides with gunfire nearby:D

I have yet to visit Lytle Creek. I go to the Inland Fish and Game range in Upland since it's close to me and it's cheap. What's the distance for rifle shooting at Lytle? I'm looking for something with 300+yds for some occasional shooting because Inland Fish and Game only goes out to 200yds.
 
Just to clarify, when I say blow up "bottles n' other stuff", I don't mean glass bottles, and I'm not talking about leaving trash all over the range. At Lytle Creek they let you blow up whatever, just as long as it's not glass, explosives, or food - and you police your mess. (they dont' allow you to shoot at food because it attracts animals). Punching paper is a-ok, but not very fun with AR's and AK's. Usually I bring soda cans, Plastic Water bottles and Clay pigeons to shoot.

For all those that own evil black rifles in Kali, Lytle Creek is definitely the place to go. They let you rapid fire as long as you keep it aimed more than 50ft down range. Plus the range masters are not a bunch of "1 shot per sec" nazis. :p
 
ocabj: Lytle goes out to 300 yrds, and there are some steel targets at 200, 300. I recommend checking it out, it's not the prettiest range in the world, but the people there are nice and they are less stringent than other ranges.

I'll see if I can take a day off sometime this month on a weekday so I can check it out. Honestly, I kind of like the 1 shot per sec rule. Rapid fire gets really distracting. Most people shooting rapid fire on handguns aren't hitting anything anyway and rapid firing your 10/22 is just heating up the bore to the point where you're not exactly shooting for pinpoint accuracy.

It would be nice to let loose with a bunch of 30 rounders through my Colt Sporter, though. If and when I do go, I'll be sure to bring my 30s and a lot of ammo. :D

My boss told me a few months ago that she and some friends went out to Lytle. She doesn't shoot but her friends do. She said the range is off on some kind of dirt trail. Should I take my 4-Runner, or will a coupe make it?
