The 2nd of my series, and the last one to cover the M-14/M1A family.

I'm gonna start off by giving it an 8.5 out of 10.

Pros:

Smaller length, less weight with the power of 7.62 NATO.
Muzzle break keeps the rifle on sight.

Cons:

Less range, but for SHTF/TEOTW, 400 meters is still more than enough.
Shortened gas system= less reliability
Heavy ammunition

If it's SHTF, we don't know how it'll play out. Give yourself all the advantages you can. If it's TEOTWAWKI, we're dealing with the aftermath of SHTF and it's probably gonna be worse in ways.

Pros:
Heavy ammo - .308Win./7.62mm
Magazine capacity
Built on M1A action

Cons:
Short barrel
Loss of power
Why stop at 400m's?

You might as well, at that rate, have something in 5.56mm. I'll take my M1 Garand and Winchester .30-30.

I'd take one of my AK's before I took my SOCOM.

308K, lighter and handier rifle, 1/3 more ammo per mag, whats not to like? :)
