Did the Springfield Armory Socom 16/II or a similar rifle really get a small SOCOM Contract? Did they just test some of the rifles from SA? Or is that rumor just a bunch of BS?

Never heard any rumors about contracts, but I know the name is Just for marketing and fun, not having anything to do with THe USSOCOM

I recall reading in one of the Gun rags while sitting on the throne that at least one unit used a SA Socom 16/II like rifle from Springfield Armory.

I think SA picked the "SOCOM" name cause it sounds cool.. I'd imagine if anyone in SOCOM ever used it, it would be all over the marketing for the rifle.

as far as i know no they haven't got a contract, it is a cool highspeed name that sells the thing. good marketing if you ask me. but for me i don't really care what a gun is called,if i like it and i want it then i am gonna get it.

Correct. Just like how HK says that since some SpecOps guys use a 416 upper, it's the best thing in the world and should be adopted (but, using their previous ideas, still kept out of the hands of the "masses"), but they fail to mention that the reason the 416 gets used is because of the whole "mag dump w/suppressor in crazy environments at close range" requirement that it fills, not the "mainline infantry precision battle rifle" concept.
Through roundabout reasoning, you'd better believe SA would market "Used by SOCOM" for that thing if it was true. If they wouldn't, then....they have a bit to learn from their marketing department.

I have a buddy over in Afghanistan who has seen a few here and there, but they are not contracted to provide rifles on an official basis. I wouldn't be surprised if a few operators who are free to choose their weapons have them.
All I know for sure is that I have one and love it!

They can and do call anything by the most tactical name they can think of. I think I'm going to start calling my chipmunk single shot .22 the "SOCOM OPERATOR DELTA TACTICAL ARMAGEDDONmunk".
I noticed in the socom ads they show some SEALish looking guy low crawling through the mud with what looks more like a M-14 or Scout. Someday I'll be able to procure one I hope (probably an 18" one like a Scout though).

Walther makes a CQB varmit gun in that sill bullpup .22LR... I guess if it isnt tac-ti-cool sounding or looking it wont sell these days.

Taking privately owned weapons downrange can be seriously bad, career ending or worse, ju-ju even in special operations units.

It might be uncle sam taking some of those M-14s sitting in warehouses and choping them down for spec ops. If not, its probably a apec ops unit that is allowed to choose their load out.

Anybody that has enough latitude to buy rifles from Springfield Armory would have more than enough clout to get real M14s with all mil-spec parts custom modded by Crane.
It's a high-speed, low drag marketing effort.
And it seems to be working for Springfield, Inc.
Umm, news flash: HK couldn't import their 416 uppers due to the recent BATF ban on importation of barrels for non-sporting rifles. That's the same ban that put the kibosh on AK and FN-FAL barrels, too. It had nothing to do with HK not wanting to sell them here, and in fact, they're opening a stateside plant to build them - with the eventual intent of selling them on the commercial market, not just military and law enforcement.
Whether I'd pay what HK wants for a 416 upper, that's another story.
