Hi All,

Who makes the softest large magnum pistol primer? Reason I am asking is because I have a S&W 629 that has had an action job done to it. The gun functions fine with .44 special loads, but when I switched to Federal Independence Ammo at the range, I got 50% misfires.

Now I am working to develop a handload for it, but I am afraid that magnum primers will cause me some problems. Any recommendations?

Thank you.

Federal primers are the easiest to set off. If your gun won't ignite them, then it's just too light.

Take the grips off and see if the person who did the action job backed out the strain screw. This is the screw at the bottom front edge of the grip that determines the strength of the hammer spring. If it's backed out at all, screw it in all the way, which is the way it was designed to be used.

Hope this helps.

Don't use ball powder and you won't need to use Magnum primers.

Try 2400 powder & standard primers for instance.

On the otherhand, If I had a 629 that got 50% mis-fires with any primer, I would put a new S&W mainspring in it!

Even with the primers that go off, you are getting very inconsistent ignition, and probably a wide variation in pressure, and accuracy.
