Substituting Standard Pistol Primers for Magnum Pistol Primers

I have a .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk. I have 2 loads for this using a 250 grain Hornady XTP and either IMR 4227 or A2400. The data calls for a magnum primer, and I use a Winchester large pistol magnum primer-the one that states you can also use it as a standard. The powder loads are not at maximum.

The only issue I have is a relative lack of large magnum pistol primers. I am anticipating that I may run out of the magnum pistol primers before I can find a source. I have plenty of standard pistol primers. I found a lot of threads discussing substituting rifle primers, but I really don't want to do that. Are there issues with using standard pistol primers with these powders?

What data are you looking at?

You do not need a mag primer for Alliant 2400.

It would have been Hornady and probably an older edition.

There are no dangers in substituting with either powder but you really should follow the rule of change: any time a major component is changed, drop back to starting loads and work up to an accurate, clean, good load for your guns.

For the most part, Magnum primers are not necessary for handgun cartridges. Certain powders really do want them (H110, most obviously) and they may be a good idea for the really gigantic cartridges, like the .500 S&W.

2400 in the .45 Colt definitely does not need - or possibly even want - a Magnum primer.

I only use magnum in pistol for 296/h110 and #9. Ball powders I believe are better served but sw heavy pistol says their not needed. I shoot piles of 2400 with standard primers.

My .45 C hunting loads are with 4227 and 2400. I only standard LPP.

Hornady and Nosler book say WLP.

Yep. I went back and looked at all of my old Hornady manual back to the 6th Ed. and Nosler back to No. 5. I developed these loads almost 20 years ago. The loads are extremely accurate, and I've never messed with them. Because of the language on the box that they can be used as magnum primers, I guess I assumed that the loads needed magnum primers. Now, I have these magnum pistol primers . . . . .

Sounds like you need a real Magnum pistol to go with them eh?
