For those who may be interested, SOG is now selling M44s for $39:

I've only shot one of these, but I don't think there's much debate about the fact that they're a rock-solid platform, with okay accuracy at 100-yards, affordable ammo, and .30-06 power. Safety sucks, though.

Add in shipping and transfer fee and it's still well under $100. Very nice deal, in my opinion.

I've never ordered from SOG before, and I won't be ordering now (April 15 was VERY painful for me). But this does look like a great price.

It's 8mm Mauser, correct? I just can't get into yet ANOTHER caliber right now, already have .308, (Savage 10FP) 30-06 (1917 Enfield and M1 Garand) and soon to pick up an SKS 7.62x39.

That is a good deal, though........................:scrutiny:

Edited to add: Oh yeah, and I forgot 30-30 (x2), not to mention shotguns 12 ga, 16 ga, 20ga, and .22 rf (x3).......

its a big family to feed:)

Riley,

Actually it is 7.62x54R................which is indeed, another caliber to get into. It is however reasonably cheap. Not as cheap as 8mm but still pretty cheap.

Chris

Not 8mm.

It's 7.62X54. A rather cheap, readily available surplus round.

Lots of corrosive stuff out there in that caliber, so take corrosive cleaning precautions.

Or, for $39 a rifle, don't take corrosive cleaning precautions.....

A word on M44's--due to the short barrel and the fact that the 7.62x54 is optimized for long barrels, you get a gigantic muzzle flash and concussion every time you fire it. Which is loads of fun.

It seems sort of appropriate that working the bolt feels like opening the breech of a field artillery piece, since the muzzle flash also resembles artillery.:D

Any idea how these rifles compare to the M44's AIM Surplus has for $49. I've heard AIM usually picks the better quality stuff.

Also, Anyone that has ordered from SOG before what do you average "OTD" price will be after shipping?

Bear in mind that the quality of these $40 rifles will be spotty.Aztec has truly nice ones for a few dollars more.I have bought 18 of them so far,and all have been excellent, cosmetically and functionally.
See them at www.aztecguns.com

I bought 20 from Aztec and all but 2 -M38 and 1 -91/30 were like new. Their's are rearsenalled with accessories. Don't need a handpick as they are all excellent. Check out the posts on Parrallax's ezboard.

the Mosin Nagant boards almost always say Aztec has the best Mosins - it's all they do. I like my M38, but wouldn't mind an M44 and a 91/30!

SOG has a far less than stellar reputation. SOG's grading of their C&R rifles has been optimistic at best from what I have read on the C&R boards. I would go to AIM, Aztec, Coles or even Big 5 and spend the extra money rather than take my chances at SOG. Go to Tuco's or Parallax Bill's sites and search for SOG. There are many conflicting opinions about SOG.
Buyer beware

clark, only 18 so far? C'mon man, you're holding us all back, get with the program. You're making us look bad.

Um, actually, I don't own any M44s. And I have read better reviews of Aztec vs. SOG, and I note that SOG lists their M44s as being in only "good" condition. But, $39?? Who knows...
