I want to get this knife for my father for a present later on down the road. Does anybody here have it? How does it do as a fishing knife?

And any specific version (I know that there is a lot) that would be better then the original?

thanks!

I have a SOG Trident Tactical Tanto with the black TiNi blade. I think that it's a fine knife. That textured handle will be nice in wet situations. My understanding is that the notch in the handle doesn't work very well as a seat belt cutter, but my thought is that it will work well for cutting fishing line without having to open the knife (which may not be a bad thing on a rocking boat). I'm not so sure about a tanto blade for a fishing knife, but it does come in other blade profiles. That aside, I think the Trident is a fine choice.

Fishing knives usually fall into the thin narrow pointy blade type that you'd see referred to as fillet knives like this folding Rapala.

The Trident doesn't fit that description, in spite of being a fine general duty folder.

What type of fishing does your dad do? The size fish that he would catch can dictate the size and shape.

HSO is 100% correct that the Trident isn't a fillet kind of knife. I think that if you are looking for a knife that is dedicated to fishing you'd best look elsewhere as suggested. But, if you want a knife that can pull multiple duties not limited to fishing, and also be useful on a boat (but not filleting), then you may still want to consider the Trident.
