well i have been pondering at buying a BIG ,expensive, really sharp knife for a while now, just something i want. today at the knife shop i found what i want i just wanted a little input first. the knife of choice is a SOG "desert dagger" and it fits the criteria, its BIG, expensive, and really sharp! the shop wants 140 for it but they also want 175 for a benchmade another shop sells for 55, so that tells me not to go there. anyone know ANYTHING about this knife or even company? please let me know

They're rather well respected on bladeforums. The blade steel isn't s30v or anything, but still decent (aus6). Tempering is at least decent. One thread suggests there may be QC issues, but again, most people are happy with them.

The DD is double-edged, so make sure that's legal if you want to carry it (double-edged knives are almost never legal to carry)

SOG makes decent stuff.

Its definitely not top of the line, but most of their stuff is pretty solid.

Search around bladeforums.com for more info on them.

If you like it, buy it. You definitely will save money on the internet, but it is always nice to support local shops.

SOG specializes in very corrosion-resistant (marine grade) big knives, so they use steels with high levels of chrome (AUS6, 440A, etc).

MOST companies use those steels because they're cheap, so they do a crappy job on the heat-treat. Not SOG. Along with Myerchin, they've really opened people's eyes up to what these steel can do .

I recently got ahold of a couple of newly designed AUS6 Cold Steels that also turn out to have a reasonable heat-treat.

Anyways. Overall, SOGs are a good value and good stuff.
