My son, Austin, wanted me to help him build an AR. He wanted it to look like a M16A3.

I had all the parts on hand other the barrel and gas tube. The barrel showed up a few weeks ago, but I forgot to order a gas tube.
Well my Brownell’s order showed up with the gas tube, and a few other things, the other day.
Last night we started on the build. We got the upper together and Was about to put the handguard on when Austin asked if I had a Magpul MOE rifle handguard. I told him yes and he said he wanted to go with Magpul furniture for the build. I guess your kids can chang their mind when you have a lot of parts on hand.
This is what we ended up with.

He even picked out a flash hider/comp from my parts.

He just headed over to his mom’s house to sight it in. I would have gone with him, but really didn’t want to see my Ex.
I’ll let y’all know how it shoots when he comes home.

I think he made a good choice in parts!
I'd put money on it shooting as good as it looks.

Gunny it’s just not kids.
We all want all sorts of ARs

My first one was like what you initially were going to build. My second one is a flattop that I priced together with inexpensive PSA parts. And my third one is the budget 3 gun that you helped me with. Each is different.

My next will be a 300 Blackout and different from the other three.

Looking at your collection and what you’ve built for them, I’d put money that your next build for them will be even different.

Very nice build but keeping the carry handle seems odd since he choose not to build a replica.

As hokie says "we all want all sorts of ARs." AR 1 & 2 are totally different builds. i have stripped lowers for ARs 3 & 4 which I am acquiring parts for. I am finding it hard to stay focused. My plans are to complete the Purple People Eater and a light(er) weight one for Daughter #1 and The Lady this year. However a rifle build idea such as what Austin has been popping up (only without the carry handle and a scope instead). Of course the only real solution is to acquire stripped lower #5.

Gunny is my inspiration.

You should have stocked up when they were on sale for $30
I wish I could have ordered more. I got a few but you can never have enough ready to go

And yea when we get to be grown up kids we all want to be like Gunny

Oh! Don’t think that he’s not going to ask for a scope pretty soon. He likes the carry handle so, a scope with a QD mount will most likely go with the rifle.
I do have some extra scopes.

Yep.

Actually I am not doing to bad considering my tight budget and the fact that less than 2 years ago I had never even shot a AR. I started out only wanting to own one AR and the other three lowers were in case HRH won the election. Well I have discovered that I actually like the AR-15 and since the political threat by the Feds is gone I started working on turning the other lowers into complete guns.

Two AR's are enough for me or so I thought. I decided to build the other two for family members especially since last Christmas Daughter #1 claimed my budget PSA build.

So two are enough except I really like the idea of a true rifle with a 20" barrel and scope.

If Gunny would just quit posting those cool pictures...

The other day he decided to change the outfit on my S&W AR. I had it dressed up in black Magpul MOE furniture.
This is what it looks like now.

at least with a cetme 308 or ak you have the options with a folding stocks
That's legit.
But, you still have to decide that in about the 1st quarter of the build, or you're going to have to backtrack a ways.

Change you mind about an AR stock, even after it's built, worst case is you need a new buffer tube, which is the joy of spinning the castle nut off. Which you might do just to put a sling mount on board.

Austin has fallen in love with this rifle. The first day he fired it he said that it would eject but not pick up the next round from the mag. But he had only fired three rounds. I polished the chamber a little and oiled the gun good and he took it out a few days later. When he got home he couldn’t stop talking about how great it shot. I guess I will be loosing this rifle before I even get a chance to shoot it.
