hello

did some photographs at the local IPSC event for Russian Police troops. There also were some long guns on display for potential buyers, to here you are with some pics to droll over:

AKS-74 (yes, full auto 5.45mm) with silencer and side-folding RPKS-74 butt

60-rounds 4-column mag for AK-74 (side view exactly the same as standard 30-rd mag, only 2 times thicker)

Couple of sniper rifles, now.

SV-98 in 7.62x54R. With proper ammo, does sub-MOA at 300 meters (2" groups at 300 yds)

SV-99 - a nice and silent .22LR tool for close work (mag fed, straight pull bolt action)

If you like Russian stuff, please check General Handguns section for some pics of recent Russian pistols

Max, thanks for the pics. I've been looking for info on the 60 round mag for ages. Do you have any diagrams or knowlege of its internals?

60rds mag

here's the diagram i've found. Not sure if magazine shown works exactly like that, but most probably it is very similar to that idea.

I think a few of those 4 column mags made it into the states, but command quite a price. Much more than a drum to be sure.

Not too different than the 4 colum 50 round Specter SMG mag, and it's semi-auto carbine counterpart.

If the AWB goes away, I've got to get me some of those 60 round magazines.

Wow.

Are there SV-98s in the US that are legal for us civvies to own? How much will they set one back?

There aren't any civilian-with-a-tax-stamp legal FA AK-74s, except for semis that were converted before '86, right? And those are likely fairly rare, correct?

I'll take one of each, thank you :D . Actually, living in California means I'm used to not being able to have a lot of really cool stuff :( .

By the way, is that SV-98 a bolt-action?

Your command of English.....

is impressive. Where were you educated? And what department are you with?

certain military hardware is determined to be not for the common man

the SV-99 stock and military rangefinding scopes are two i have heard of...

the stock is really nifty:

2 Riphalman.
I graduated from St.Petersburg state technical university in '95, and now im in IT department, clicking buttons and finding anykeys. Guns are my hobby and passion, and i work part-time for leading russian gun magazines, like "GUN" ("Ruzhjo") and the "Guns & Ammo Digest - Russian edition".

By the way - I learned a lot of gun slang from both TFL and THR, so i must say thank you for all of you, pals  .

2 Beetle Bailey.
Yes, SV-98 is bolt-action. based on the SM-2 "Record" 7.62mm CISM rifle action.

I think it's really cool that the 7.62x54mmR round is still so popular despite being (I believe) the longest running service round in history. (Since 1891)

Now if MOLOT would make a VEPR in 7.62x54mmR I could die happy.

Vepr in 7.62x54R? hardly. especially because this niche is already occupied by the IzhMash-made Tiger, a "civilianized" copy of the Dragunov SVD.

The AK-based Vepr action is not easily modifiable for a rimmed case like x54R, and i doubt that there will be much demand on that monster.

OTOH, if the US import laws could be a little nicer to the Russian manufacturers, i could imagine the PKM "sporter", a semi-auto 7.62x54R beltfed "rifle" of purely sporting purpose
