I own a .45 XD Tactical, and I've read on many different sites that XD's are great weapons with a trigger job. What exactly does a trigger job entail? What would be done to the weapon and how would it affect the trigger pull?

I've also been trying to find a good holster for my XD with the short term goal of joining the local USPSA chapter. Any recommendations?

My version of an XD trigger job was to shoot 1,000 rounds through it.

The weapon arrived a bit stiff, but firing it really smoothed things out. Unless you're antsy to sell it off if you don't immediately fall in love, I'd hang with it and take it to the range many, many times.

Also, that's the only "trigger job" that can't be turned against you in court, where they'll say you put a "hair trigger" on your baby-killing death device because you were just so eager to kill somebody.

I own a XD40 tactical and a sub compact in 40 as well and have been happy with the stock trigger.

What exactly do you wish to change about it? You can have a simple polish job if it feels gritty, as mine did the first 500 rounds or so. I did need to do some maintenance on the internals after about 20k rounds, but nothing terribly difficult. Had a worn ejector and some rounding on the extractor.

I'd advise you to shoot a few boxes at the range and get a feel before changing anything. I find the XD's to break nice and cleanly, but many find them to be a bit "mushy". The typical trigger mod on an XD is a shorter travel and lighter pull. I would like the trigger reset to occur a bit earlier, but that's just my personal preference.

I have a kydex holster for IDPA made by a local guy that serves me well for competitions and an IWB for concealed on the sub-compact. Note I never actually carry said sub-compact as it's a bit chunky. The old airweight serves for that purpose.

I have an XD-9 sub-compact, and I have to admit the SA DAO trigger
configuration took me a while to get used to. I agree with PC - a little "mushy",
but not in an irritating way, if that makes any sense. I used the weapon to qualify
for my CCW permit, but not before I put a couple hundred rounds through it to get
used to the trigger action. Two years later, with no modifications, I can say that I like
the weapon a lot, and shoot it regularly.

As for a holster, believe it or not I've found the Fobus paddle to my liking
for the XD.

Mushy, creepy triggers.

I agree with some here that XD triggers can be mushy. I have three, and have had over 1000 rds through two of them. Their triggers are still kind of creepy--I get to the point in the trigger pull when I start to get resistance, and instead of breaking cleanly, it creeps through the release phase with a little grit. Much different than a 1911, the only other large-caliber pistol with which I have any experience.

I've read a lot of good things about trigger jobs by this guy over on XD Talk:

My plan is to send Scott one, have him work on it, and if it's cool, I'll probably have the other two done. YMMV, of course.

welcome to thr, like others have said above, the trigger gets better with time and dry fire. i saw a great improvment after 500rd, even more after 1k rds and it has over 6k through it right now and it has been perfect since the 1500rd mark, i couldn't be happier and i have no need to send it off for a trigger job, it is good to go in my book.

holsters, check out blade tech, don hume, black hawk serpa, center of mass, side armor, just a few to get you started.

I hadn't put more than 300 rounds before my XD-45 before I noticed that the trigger was markedly smoother than before. At this point, it's probably at about five pounds, if not a little lighter, and it's nothing but a joy to shoot.

I thought mine was alittle long on travel, but canyon creek solved that.Been shootin XD40 for alittle over 3yrs,3k rounds and ove it.

A lighter pull, shorter travel, and a little polishing sounds about right. I'll have to do some research on this Canyon Creek shop. Thanks for the advice, and that goes to everyone :).

Well, he did mine and it helps a lot. I'm used to a 1911, have 3 of them and 2 have trigger jobs and 3k+ rounds through them. The XD is not nor ever will be a 1911 as far as the trigger goes, good for some and bad for others. It is a HUGE improvement over stock, no matter how many rounds you shoot.

He has the chance of being fairly close to ya for a weekend trip.

I might need to spend some money my own self. I've been thinking of adding a xd45 to the lineup and might as well get it done before I grow too attached to send it away. Thanks from me as well.

Funny, my only "complaint" about the XD line is the trigger pull. I'm thinking of sending one of mine to Springfield for a trigger job.

Take care,
DFW1911

Just as an aside, you may just have to get used to the new feel.

A million years ago when I bought my first Glock I was a wheelgun shooter. The Glock's trigger was way different than what I was used to.

The XD is a great gun, I think I may pick one up one of these days!
