So, after reading a thread about carrying a Beretta 92FS cocked and unlocked from 2003, everyone kept comparing it to the Glocks, with a big issue being the trigger safety thing (little lever inside the middle of the trigger). The thread got a little over my head with everything.

I have a Kahr MK9 that I use for EDC, with one in the chamber. I just purchased a Beretta 92FS used, and although I have owned a SW 5906 before, I never really got into the cocked vs uncocked ordeal as it was not an issue to me as I didn't have a CWP at the time.

What's the difference between carrying my Kahr MK9 with one in the chamber vs carrying the Beretta 92FS with one in the chamber, cocked and unlocked.

Also, how are 1911 guys carrying? Cocked and locked?

I'm not super informed on the gun terminology, so if you want to treat me like a complete moron, I'll appreciate it. :D

Also, I'm just asking the question. I don't want to hear the "You are an idiot for even thinking about it." I just want to expand my knowledge here a little bit.

EDIT: Also, anyone care to explain the differences between the Beretta M9, 92FS, etc. Trying not to start another thread here...

The Kahr is like a Glock but without the trigger "safety" lever. Its pull is more revolver like, but its not DA, as like a Glock the slide has to partially retract to reset the trigger. The Glock has a shorter stroke. The Beretta 92 cocked is not like a Glock at all as the force is lower and the trigger travel distance shorter.

Energy is Force times Distance, so trigger travel distance times trigger weight is the energy needed (in-lbs) to fire the gun which should be above some threshold (which is debatable) to be considered safe.

Cocked and locked is the best way for a 1911 to be at the ready. It has the shortest trigger travel and usually lowest force of all, hence the grip and thumb safties.

The best bet is read the owners manual and undersatand the guns operation.

If you want a SA Beretta 92 get the Taurus PT92/99 which has a decocker for DA/SA operation like the Beretta and a thumb safety that will also allow cocked and locked carry like a 1911. Some varients of HK USP and a few others I can't name off hand, have this same feature.

I truly hope you're not seriously considering carrying a 92FS "cocked and unlocked". That would carrying with a round in the chamber, hammer cocked, and safety DISENGAGED.

Perhaps you really meant to refer to carrying a DA/SA pistol like the 92FS with a round in the chamber, but with the hammer uncocked? Meaning that you are ready to fire with a double-action trigger pull? Even in this situation, I would still use the safety.
