These guys were just over the property line yesterday on/in the neighbor's backyard. We probably live about 300 yards apart. They were "play fighting". Been seeing a lot of moose lately, but not these two before. I see that next year they are giving out two (maybe four I forget) tags in this GMU, but they cost like $300 bucks, and it's a lottery type draw. Getting a moose on the nearby state land would be a "pretty sure" bet, but I don't think I'll take the bet. With a tag in my pocket, I'd probably not see hide or hair of one. !!!

Those are some lifelike Christmas decorations.
Do they say what the chance would be to draw a tag,

I'm thinking that four tags would not make for very good chances. Also, every time you put in for a special tag, and they don't draw you, you get "points" which moves you up or something...so never having applied for any special tags or hunts I'd be on the bottom of the pile. I'd say no chance.

Not sure if I would wish moose in the back yard. Like you, it seems like if you paid and got the tag, there wouldn’t be any to shoot.

No, I'm not real excited about all the moose we have now. Kind of intimidating animals when you run into them, not like seeing elk or deer. Moose can get aggressive, I don't really trust them. The ones here don't have much fear of humans, let you get quite close to them, not that I try to. Don't like being around them when I'm lightly armed.

We have Moose in NY to the North of us. My Counsin hit one with her car near Watertown NY. Near Fort Drum.

she didn’t get hurt bad. They are slowly moving more south. They are pretty big creatures.
About 15 years ago a moose was hit and killed by a car on the highway down by bear mountain, not sure how one got all the down there.

Kinda sucks they pretty much made pay to play, only the ones that can afford for waste drawing a tag have a chance.

I saw lots of Moose when I visited Alaska years ago. They are seen more and more in NY even farther south. I haven’t ever seen one. Not sure I would spend that much just for a chance at a tag. But then I again I haven’t been presented with that choice. Might be nice to hunt one.

They follow the parkways and power line right of ways.

There was a moose strike in northern Westchester Co. some years ago on I-684, and a bear got down as far as Yonkers, just over the Bronx border.

It does suck when you consider that the moose population has naturally increased. The game department didn't plant them, or manage them, or put any funds into the moose. So yeah, no reason to charge a premium for the chance of drawing a tag. Should not be priced any higher than elk or deer tags, and preference should be given to handicapped and senior hunters. However, yeah, I think it's called "greed".

I don't know what state you are in, but if I had moose that close, I'd be applying for a tag every year. The moose I killed here in Idaho was the best wild game meat I've ever had.

Yes I probably should. My Grandparents in Northern Ontario Canada lived on moose meat. I've never had it, but I'm sure it's as good as or better than Elk. But the best wild game meat I've ever had, by far, bar none, absolutely, is Cougar. I am in Eastern Washington State.

My wife is fascinated by moose. I have no desire to hunt one and it is a good thing. She doesn't mind me killing most any critter, but I think she'd leave me if I killed a moose. We have vacationed and camped in Colorado and Wyoming multiple times, and we can't leave until we see a moose. Last summer we went to Maine, and had to hike quite a way into Baxter State Park to find a moose for her.

I had to make plywood silhouettes for the yard. Sorry for the crappy pic. I'm still surprised there are no bullet holes in them yet.

She even made shower curtains. She made those; hand painted using the same template used on the silhouettes.

Wow, nice job on the shower curtains, and the silhouettes. I have a picture (somewhere) of a cow and calf moose swimming across Hungry Horse lake in Montana when I was there on a kayak trip. That is a huge body water the Hungry Horse, I guess they could swim forever!!

Lotterys for tags and special hunts never worked out for me.
About the only lottery I had a chance at "winning" was that one from the government that started with "Greetings..." :uhoh:
