A few months ago I purchased a Pedersoli 1777 Charleville musket.
Since then I've been playing around with it and enjoying the heck out of it using paper cartridges.
One problem has been after about 6 or 8 shots the bore gets caked up and requires wet swabbing to keep running.
So I hit on the bright idea of using some of my C&B BP lube in the musket.
I'm using the lube recipe from the tacked thread at the top of the forum.
I tried several different methods of melting and pouring lube "buttons" and proceeded to make a huge mess with unsatisfactory results.
A few days ago I had left the tupperware container I keep the lube cakes stored in out in the car. Car got typical warm in the sun. When I retrieved the lube cakes they were putty soft from the heat.
DING! Idea. I took the cakes and started rolling them with my hands into long thin strings. Then using an Exacto Knife I cut the strings into button sized chunks. A few turns between the fingers and presto! Lube buttons.
I was sitting at my desk making these when the 6yr old grand daughter was over visiting. She wanted a whack at it so here we went, rolling wax buttons like play dough! HA! Mom wasn't too happy about waxy fingers but they wash up fine.
