That was the quote I just heard on a Fox News ad.

A female reporter, presumably in Iraq, is shown ducking down while saying, "It sounds like they are firing flechettes."

Anyone seen this ad?

Do flechette rounds have a distinctive sound?

[Eastwood voice]This is the AK47, preferred weapon of the enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired.[/Clint's voice]

Some years ago with another employer I saw test firings of flechette "beehive" rounds.

They're named beehives because when they eject the darts it sounds like a swarm of very angry bees.

They have a VERY distinct sound.

Tests with 12ga handloads were... impressive, if not effective. Mostly psychological, like an "ominous hum".

Perhaps this is a stupid question but...was this incoming or outgoing?

I don't know. I was only paying half attention to the TV when that commercial came on. Obviously, that reporter's statement got my attention focused on the TV, but I could not tell who was shooting.

In Desert Storm the Brits were testing a rifle round that had just one flechette. I once saw an xray of someone who had been hit with flechettes - they went in then bent and changed their path. In Viet Nam they used rockets laoded with many flechettes.
