Source for ProGun? NYC High school rifle clubs, minors with guns on subway, etc.

When I argue the pro-gun position, a lot of times I take the stance that it isn't guns which have become dramatically more deadly or evil in the past decades, but humans/society. The unthinkable becomes reality through no fault of an old or existing technology. Some examples I give are of the Texas Tower shooting, JFK's assassination (no more open cars), and 9/11 (airline missile).

One example that I like, since it ties in to NYC, school shootings, and minors was something I read a while back but cannot for the life of me remember the specific source. This gist of it was that as far as into the 60s, a high school student in New York City could bring his rifle to school for the after school Target/Riflery Club. He would bring his gun, walk through the streets, take in on the subway, and arrive at school with it and no one would blink an eye. The coach or club supervisor would lock up the rifle for the school day only to come out after school. Today, that entire scenario seems to be utterly unthinkable to many.

Anyways, rather than continously cite the above without a solid source, can anyone verify the above or better yet point out some texts where it may have come from?

My old High School in Brooklyn had a rifle range in the basement.

University of Illinois had a rifle range for ROTC in 1960. Had rifles on campus and you could go shoot when you wanted to. Everyone had to participate in ROTC. Men, that is.

My mom told me that when she was a girl, she would bring her rifle to school with her and keep it in her locker. So after school, she and her friends could go shoot rats at the sand pit. That was in New Jersey (Montclair). But that was back in the 40's. :)

Brooklyn Technical HS had a rifle team as did a number of others .I graduated in '60 but the teams where there until the anti gun hysteria closed them down in the late '60s !.A very sad story ,there was never a problem with any of the students in those teams as far as I know [certainly not in my school.
