South Dakota prairie dog shooting in spring?

I'm looking to do some praire dog shooting once spring rolls around, sometime in March/April. Since the guided prairie dog hunts are like $1000 a day, I was wondering if anyone knows of any places where a few of us could get together for a day or two in a couple of months. I live in Illinois but I will drive up there.

funny I was just thinking about the same thing, only in may or june. It would be nice to hook up with someone that has made the trip before and knows the area.

Contact the Warrior Inn in Winner, they have an 800 number. I stay there when hunting pheasants and they have told me that they have prairie dog shooters also. Much of the land is Indian controled and I think the shooting has slowed down.

Just remember, on public (non-private) land, prairie dog season is closed from March 1 through June 14.

I live in eastern South Dakota, I'll do some checking around. I know a couple people who have gone to the reservations and paid a resident $50 for a whole days worth of shooting. Like I said, I'll look around and see what I can find out.

order a copy of Varmint Hunter magazine, they live for this and for the cost of a subscription you get a good magazine and a lot of resources on dog land. lost of ads for motels and places to hunt. Also if you call around out there you can find mom and pop operation motels etc that have lots of connections for hunting. My first time, I just called around and one motel had a couple of rooms and said with a room reservation they would find me places to hunt. I got out there and they had three USGS maps all lined out with PD towns on private land that belonged to them or to people willing to have people hunt the land.

remember tho, leave no trace of your trip, collect all brass, pick up your trash and make sure you watch where you step, PD land is rattler land.
close all gates. leave presents with your hosts.

Two years ago we went out and land that we always had access to was now closed. why? Nimrods had been out and shot a town, left beer bottles all over with their trash and empties, and let 300 head wander out thru two gates they forgot to close. So be good, act like you are a guest, and you want to be invited back.

I'd have some interest, especially later in June. March in SoDak is pretty unpredictable...but then again, I grew up in Fargo, where I learned that the weather is better anywhere south of Fargo, including SoDak!

I AM GONNA TOSS IN MY TWO CENTS WORTH HERE.

I live in the Black Hills. We do not hunt prairie rats until the first of June or so as a matter of practicality. By then there are a whole bunch more targets with the spring birth of the young and stupid ones. March and April can be really nasty months here with BIG wet snowstorms, the really nasty kind that you can't do a damn thing with until it's over. A foot or more of powder snow is no problem atall, but a foot or two of wet snow will strand you where ever you are. If you're not prepared for it, you are just SOL .
On the other hand I do know exactly where we're going rat shooting this year and there is a TON of the scurvy little bastards. We only got 4000 of 'em last year. We'll try to do better this year.
