sp101 or gp100

If you are going to conceal, the SP-101 hands down...

I only got made once, and believe it or not it was by a 3 year old toddler.

I Got both......

Well, not exactly. I have a 3 inch GP100 and a 2 inch SP101.
I use the 2 in. SP101 for everyday CCW, around the house, around the acreage, making the 85 yrd walk to the mailbox. It's a constant Companion.

I wear the GP100 whenever I go to town, or up to the City.
The 3 inch GP100 carries like a Champ. But it's a little heavier, day in & day out.
I wouldn't part with either one of them.
In your position, you might look at a 3 inch GP100.
Buy which ever you like best.

Well I think I have made my mind up. I have to have both (suprise surise). I think since I know where an excelent 4" GP is I will buy it first and then keep an eye out for a used 3 SP I am not lacking for something to carry right now and with winter coming up I will be wearing a jacket more so I will be able to conceal the 4" when I feel the need and will give a little more umph in the woods and build confidence in my shooting with the adjustable sights, I would like to say thank you to everyone the comparison of the two pistols is well put here so hopefully someone else in the same delima will get some help reading this. I will save them some time its not which do you need but which do you need first. thanks again Ill save my nickles and when I get it I will report back.

I carried my 4" N-Frame S&W this past summer in Georgia.

The "trick" is using a good Holster/Belt Combo like Milt Sparks or Matt Del Fatti and "Dressing Around The Gun." I favor IWB for carry and you may find it works better too.

If I were you I would talk to a custom Holster Maker. If you have good leather it's amazing what you can hide. :)

Much prefer the SP101 personally. I cannot warm up to the GP100, just too big and heavy even to consider for outdoor carry. It weighs as much as my blackhawks! I have a fantastic medium frame Taurus M66 I like a lot. No, it's not as strong as a GP, but it'll last my lifetime I'm quite sure. I have a 2.3" SP101 I carry a lot in thunderwear. It's a great gun, the smallest gun I can fire heavy loads from comfortably. I have a Hogue monogrip on it. It's quite accurate. A 3" gun would compromise very little for portability and give you better sight radius and ballistic performance. I bought mine used and the price was right, $250. I wasn't going to quibble over another .8" of barrel. :D

I've got a good line on a used, but like new Ruger Security Six stainless 4". Guy wants $250 for it, very reasonable and about what I consider the gun to be worth. He also wants a .380 and I have a good .380 to use in trade, so I'm going to maybe make a road trip this week. :D I had a Security Six, was my first center fire handgun. It wasn't perfect, didn't like .38 special too much, just so, so accurate with .38s, but was quite accurate with magnums. It had a lot of felt recoil, though. I think my SP101 is more comfortable to shoot. However, I miss the old gun and would like to have another and have been thinking of getting a P3AT to replace that .380 in my collection anyway. Sounds like a no brainer swap to me. :D I've offered him the .380 plus 125 bucks. The .380 is an old Grendel P12, 100 percent functioning, but not a lot of value to it. I'm trying to be fair with the guy while satisfying both of us with the deal. We're going to find a range and do some shooting first. I wanna make sure he can handle the trigger on that thing. I shoot it well, but I shoot DA pretty well. It's a rough trigger. But, he says that it's just what he's lookin' for, so we'll see. But, I don't want him mad at me if he don't like the gun, LOL.

The Speed Six is the same gun with fixed sights and with a 3" barrel is not much, if any heavier than an SP101 and holds an extra round. The Security Six I'm looking at is a 4", but I think a 3" Speed Six would be an awesome carry piece if one could be found reasonably priced. I also have a 3" Taurus 66 (yeah, I'm .357 poor, LOL), about the size of a speed six, and it's only marginally heavier than the SP101, but the grip is a bit bigger to conceal. I have a Hogue on that one, too. But, for CCW, I'm quite happy with my SP101. It's quite accuate even with the wimpy sight radius and a 3" would only make it better. If I'm going to buy a 40 ounce plus revolver, it's going to have to be a .44 mag or something, big N frame for hunting. I just can't see getting a .357 that size. I do have a Blackhawk I use for hunting in .357, 6.5" barrel, about 40 ounces. Hate to have to tote that thing IWB all day, LOL! I've killed a couple of deer with it, though, very accurate, strong, powerful gun.

I had an SP101 3". I loved it. Concealed well, just too heavy for me to carry daily with a bad back. I traded it for a GP100 4" which I do not intend to carry, but I can conceal it if I really need to. The GP is a MUCH better shooter in 357, tho the SP101 is no slouch. I really wouldn't go much lighter for a carry piece in 357 than the SP101. For your needs, I might compromise and go with a 3" GP-100. Should handle all of the needs you mentioned.

Yup, you need both. So start watching for a good deal. I bought a used 4" adjustable sight GP100 for $350; came with original factory grip with rosewood inserts, an extra set of black (wood, not plastic) inserts, and a Pachmyr (I think) boot grip. Picked up a second-hand 2.25" SP101 in .357 for $250, on consignment at my local dealer's. Good deals are out there if you're not in a rush.

Nice pics, Paddling Man; thanks. I put the smaller grip on my adjustable sight GP100 and really like the change despite the fact that I have large hands.

Legionaire-

Same here. 6'3", 225# but I'm more comfortable with the small grips. The big grips are fun and still comfortable but the small ones fit my hand perfectly.

A 4" GP is hardly the ideal CCW (my primary CCW is a 642) but the small grip makes it at least possible when desired. That big grip prints that much more.
