For "social occasions" is the difference in POA/POI between .357 and .38sp really relevant ???

Yes, even for CCW, I want POA to equal POI. I'm a stickler about shot placement. As has been said, you can't miss fast enough.

But, did you bother to read the post? This is about an outdoor gun. You might have to take out a bear at 40 yards. You might want some camp meat, a sitting rabbit at 30 yards. If POA doesn't equal POI, you could be eating more Dinty Moore stew or you might get eatin' by that charging bear.

I've shot quite a bit of game with a handgun. Just like with a rifle, it needs to be sighted in properly. Face to face from 10 feet, you might not need POA to equal POI, but I still want it. You just never know when you're going to be beyond point shooting range and defending yourself.

well since I picked up my 3rd S&W revolver yesterday, I think its only fair to add a ruger to my evergrowing colection! MY Bday is coming up and my wife keeps asking what she can get me...I'm thinking 3" sp101:) I agree with all the posters that SS is the way to go for this guns intended use.

You might have to take out a bear at 40 yards.

Why ??? I've been a lot closer than 40 yards to bears several times and never felt the urge to shoot one. Besides, if I needed to shoot a bear, I sure hope I have at least .357 mag rounds loaded. I still don't see the problem - carry loaded with .357s (which the fixed sights will no doubt be designed for) in the "woods" and .38 specials in town if you prefer. I doubt a half inch or less difference in elevation will make much difference on a snap shot at 10 feet or less.

Suit yourself, I prefer precision.

I have read stories of browns charging from 100 yards away. I wouldn't have a .357 in brownie country, though, and black bear are quite docile. I've been close to 'em, too. I still want my sights to sit where the bullet is going, though, especially in .38 for rabbits. I carry all the time rifle hunting and used to have a 13,000 acre lease out west of Langtry, Texas in the trans pecos chihuahuan desert country. I've killed rabbits at 25-30 yards using .38 with my side arm and a Javelina at 50 yards all in the same day's hunting. Of course, I coulda shot that Javelina with my rifle, but I had the gun loaded with .357s when he came along and the sights adjusted for 'em and just thought it'd be cool to take that porker with the revolver, LOL.

I hunt, hunters prefer precision. It carries over to self defense with me, too. There are pocket guns without sights. Was it AMT? Had a grove down the slide, theory being you don't need sights at PBR. Well, buddy, you just never know. I ain't buyin' no gun without sights. I can point shoot with sights, but I can't aim without 'em.

I like the SP101 a lot. The 3" would be good for a belt gun, but I'd just as soon get the 3" GP100 for the extra shot (compact grips on that one make a huge difference. I don't find it nearly as heavy as some make it out to be). I think the 2.25" SP101 would be great for versatility... option of pocket carry (yeah, it's "heavy", wear a good belt), coat pocket carry, ankle, IWB, OWB, belly band...you name it. I'll end up owning one or the other or both myself. It's been a looooooong running debate with myself.

The model 19 is, as has been mentioned, not designed for a "steady diet of magnums." It's hard to say what the diet has been up to the point you purchase it. People like K frames, but I personally think you can do just as well if not better with a NIB Ruger or Smith.

I carried a 3" 38Spl SP 101 for about 5 years as a narc. I prefered it over the issue 2" 64 we had back then. In the humidity of coastal NC it was a great chioce and gave me no problems with shhoing possibles on the State Qual Course. I think it would make a great back packing gun.
