I hope you learned members can shed some light on this. I found a local seller advertising a Mauser chambered in 6.5x55 with Swedish barrel but with "La Coruna (sp)" stamped on the receiver.

I was intrigued by the possibility of a Swedish Mauser available locally but in doing some research, what is being sold is likely a Spanish Mauser rebarelled in 6.5x55 with Swedish parts.

I'll have a look-see later today. Can anybody comment on how stable and accurate such a platform would be?

I've read the large ring Mausers can be rebarrelled in different calibers but have no personal experience. Your input is appreciated.

IIRC, the actions are basically the same. Dunno why it wouldn't shoot - if done right.

That said, I'd pass. I'll sometimes play with a bubba'd 98 action, but with a 96 action, at the end of the day and wallet - it's still a 96 action. JMHO.

Of course, you can about rebarrel a 98 or one of its large ring derivatives to almost any cartridge you want. I think there are some that will give you feeding problems or you may ruin the action trying to fit it where it will feed certain cartridges. However, if you have a short, fat cartridge that won't chamber well due to its diameter, you can convert it to a straight stacked magazine, so says an expert on another thread I belong to. He says you can make a straight box mag where the cartridges stack one upon the other. This limits the cartridge capacity by one or two cartridges, depending on how big they are. But it will work according to Teach on the G&A forum, who is a master Mauser mechanic.
But other than that, the sky's the limit, providing it's not too long. And there are some Magnum Mauser actions you can buy out there, pricey but available.
I have 4 Yugo's and am having one made into a .257 Roberts Ackley Improved. I will have another made into one of my favorite all time cartridges, the 6mm Remington. I also have one Zastava Charles Daly Mauser that is nice and already in sporter form, waiting on a barrel of some caliber. Then I have two more Yugos I haven't decided what caliber they will become. Another caliber that interests me is a 6.5X57.

I wouldn't be afraid of it if it looks reasonable. I don't like the cock on close feature on those but you can get used to it or put in a cock on opening conversion that Brownells sells. A large ring can be converted to short fat cart like the 22-250 fairly easy by geting a short mag follower and spring from Sportsmans Whse which also comes with a mag block. Work might be needed on the rails to open them a tad for reliable feeding. The CZ or VZs are easier to convert as there are many more aftermarket parts available for them than for the Yugo.

Problem is the seller does not know who rebarrelled it. He has had it for 10 years, bought at a gun show. He says it shoots fine just doesn't belong in his collection. It may sound like a bargain but I passed on it without looking at it. I didn't want to get stuck with a potentially problematic rifle. Will just keep looking for a genuine Swede Mauser.

Thanks everyone.
