A few questions regarding a Spanish Mauser .308. I forget which model it is (not FR7 or FR8). I have done some research and after inspecting my bolt I see it is the later model with the third "lug" I believe it is called. ALso the safety lug found on a 1898. Not sure of the year though for it's modle number or year of manufacture.

I am wondering about the sights though.
1) My rear sight doesn't move lower than a 2. Is this standard and It doesn't need adjustment until after two hundred yards(meters)?

2) How do I adjust my front sight post if needed?

3) Does anyone have a good sight for information on this rifle and possible break down for cleaning. I can remove the bolt but was wondering how to break it down further.

Thanks for your time and help in advance. Can't wait to get out and shoot it.

Here's some info on what may be your rifle. It shows the break down on the right side, just click on whatever you want to know about.
The rear sights were typical of Mauser's made to make body hits with a center hold. There are higher front sights made to replace the original so you can shoot 100yd ranges instead of hitting high as set up with the original front sight. They are adjustable as they are dovetailed and will move L or R with a brass drift.
I caution you on using 308 Win factory ammo. They are designed for NATO 7.62x51 which operates at a lot lower pressure. Some Spanish Mausers are prone to having soft actions due to improper heat treatment.
Always good to check the headspace before shooting.

NCsmitty

Thanks for the information NCsmitty. I am aware of the need to use Nato spec ammo and check periodically with a go and no go gauge.

I will investigate the changing of a front post but may leave it alone. It's going to be used to shoot at 100 and 200 yards but as my skill develops mostly two hundred for this and a hundred with my Saiga. For right now that's as far a range i have available to me.

I am looking into reloading and want to increase my firearms chambered in 7.62x51 since all my reloading will be for this rifle round. The semi's in this caliber are so overpriced right now, I can't pass up some of the deals I'm finding on rifles like this and an Enfieled(sp?). Hoping to find an Israeli barreled mauser as well. The site you gave me has great info on all of them so thank you again.

Did you get your Spanish 1916 rifle from SAMCO lately? They've had them listed on there web site backordered for a long time.
