"Spanish Steel"-I have a 98 Mauser that was made in Spain

in 1948. Sometime in the '60's, it was rebarrelled to .308 Win and nicely gunsmithed by a professional - jeweled bent handled bolt, beautiful blue...I have had this rifle for several years and have owned many other Spanish made handguns as well, and have never had any problems with any of them that could be attributed to bad steel. THAT is a myth.
FWIW, some pre-98 Mausers from South America (made in Germany) were re-barreled using '03 Springfield barrels cut back and chambered to .308/7.62 NATO. They were and are very solid, tough reliable rifles and are hard to find.

I'd certainly cancel my order, though and look for a 98 Mauser - a Yugo if you are going to mess with it...it is a much better rifle overall, a masterpiece of design...and there is nothing wrong with the 8mm round, either...

How did you get the MCA adapter?
I have tried calling and emailing and cannot reach the guy.

I called up to order, and they don't take CC's; so i sent a letter asking for 2 .308 to 7.62x25, with a check for whatever the right amount was, and 8 or 10 days later they appeared in the mail. Since then i've managed to loose one at the range...

Actually, to clarify, the MCAce adapter is for .30 Mauser, not 7.62x25 Tokarev, but the dimensions are identical except for OAL, so it works just fine.

This is a great way to give new life to a wall-hanger.

I think it's a small operation, might be one guy out of his garage or basement. I think i also saw them on the sportsman's guide website somewhere, but without the chambering choices MCAce has.

This topic appeared on whichever gun website a few months ago. It might have been at 'Thefiringline', but I don't know.

Somebody provided a link to the a description of a tragedy at a PA range, where the owner of the (1890's) Spanish Mauser converted to .308 died on the spot.

There was No info about what type ammo, nor who manufactured it etc, or anything about the condition of the rifle, other than that one or more pieces from the gun killed the owner.

Mine just arrived. Cleaned up pretty nicely. Nice and bright bore. My brother is going to work up some low-power handloads with cheap pull-down bullets. So I guess Samco actually has them. I was on the verge of cancelling the order.

Wrt the design of the 93 action, FWIW, I have a sporterized Swede in 6.5 x 55 that's digested a fairly steady diet of stout loads clocking around 2700 with a 140 Gamepoint out of a 20" barrel.

I've cut back a half a grain and will go to a 120 NBT to further reduce pressure - but in developing the 140 load, I dropped back at the first sign of pressure and settled on a great load in terms of accuracy.

Not encouraging anyone else, but IMO, a lot of hearsay gets passed along as to what's safe and what's not. With the range of what's called safe and unsafe anymore varying from book to book - I just think one has to be careful and experiment to figure out what's true.

Assuming headspace checks out and the gun is in is good shape, I think many times we're overly cautious with the 93 action. I will add that I much prefer the 98 action. However my little Swede is a sweet-shooting, handy rifle and those .308s on 93s seem to be the same. There's a lot to like and if one is careful, I believe they're safe. JMHO.
