I want to order a spare cylinder or two for my Pietta 1860.

I see that Dixie gun works has the 1860 cylinders for $91.00 each.......Cabelas has the same at only 49.00 each (!)

Why such a big difference in pricing? Are the cylinders from Dixie a better quality than those sold at Cabelas?

Many thanks for opinions,
Russ

Wow! Looked figuring it must be an Uberti cylinder. There's no difference. It's Pietta made.

Maybe Cabelas has a better price because they buy much larger quantities getting a better price themselves.

There may be a difference in newer and older versions though. I bought spare springs and screws, supposedly for my newer 2013 NMA and only one worked.

No, you need to get the Pietta 1860 cylinder. Get the best price one. Dixie is a good company, and they carry parts for many repros, and even original guns, so be sure you KNOW what you're ordering from their catalog.
Cabelas is a reputable company, and the Pietta cylinder will be good or they will make it right for you.

I have purchased Pietta cylinders from Cabelas and they are same quality as the revolver originals. Your guess is as good as mine as to why the big difference in price. They work.

Even though the 1860 .44 Cabelas cylinder pictured is engraved, the text does not mention engraving:

I think it may be an old picture and that Cabelas is only selling blank cylinders now after closing out their engraved ones about a year ago..

Note that the picture for the 1851 .44 cylinder shows no engraving but is the same price as the one for the 1860:

http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/prod...oduct&WT.ac=YMAL-735135&WT.z_pg_ref=prd705485

The same is true for the 1851 .36 cylinder:

I would at least call Cabelas to place your order and verify that it is engraved.

Of course, if the engraving does not matter to you go for it!!!

The Dixie ones may actually be the engraved ones as the text and the picture agree it is engraved:

I bought a spare Pietta 1860 cylinder from Cabelas in June of 2016. It's engraved and installed on the left 1860 below. Bought that one from gunbroker w/ a Howell conversion cylinder (no bp cylinder). Gun on the right came from Dixie Gun Works.

I appreciate every ones opinion here. Thanks. Naturally I'm going to order the less expensive cylinders from Cabelas.

I do like the fact that Dixie sells a complete set of screws for the Pietta 1860 in a blister pack for $24.00. Very reasonable I think.

You might want a set of nipples. Seem to recall one of the Cabela's Pietta nipples was crusty.
I had a set came with the Pietta nipple wrench, I bought.

Ok can somebody explain why my 1860 Army revolver has a naval scene on it.I like it but it is one of those head scratchers. My 51 navy doesn't have a calvery scene on it.

I assume you know the history and are just being sarcastic?

The 1851 Colt Navy was never bought by any navy. The engraving honors the Texas Navy because Samuel Colt was indebted to Texas for buying a bunch of Colt Patersons that bailed him out of bankruptcy.

I'm just guessing here, but Colt's 1860 was just the 1851 design for the popular .44 caliber. And continuing the engraving tradition.

Alls I can do is add my opinion. I've gotten two spares for my 58 remmy and 2 for my 51 navy. All were from Cabelas and all have functioned fine. :D I got every one of 'em when Cabelas had 'em on sale for 40 bucks. I just couldn't turn down a sale. :D It's neat, though, to load 'em all up in the AC, go out back and shoot 'em up, come in and either reload 'em or clean up. :D That's real handy this time of year.

Last Pietta 1860 cylinder I bought through the mail from Cabelas was blank with no engraving. Didn't matter to me as I was only using it as a spare, but could be the difference in prices as already mentioned.

It is odd that Cabelas was that much less expensive, generally I don't find Cabelas prices to be cheaper on anything.

Cabela's price on C&B revolvers is generally the lowest around. Historically, they have put them on sale at significant additional savings annually around November/December. If you are looking for a C&B specimen that Cabela's carries, you will be hard pressed to find a lower price than they offer up during their Black Power Sale.
