Incident, in regard to a close friend’s daughter.

This actually has two parts, both worth thinking about and adding to the “Situational Awareness Toolboxâ€.

Daughter is good looking Junior in High School, honor roll with a 4.4 GPA. Very Athletic and was taught how to shoot and be aware of surroundings early. So she has a nice new car which she deserves, sporty little thing and I won’t divulge as to protect her.

She returns from a live theatre performance held at a college out of town approximately an hour away. She and another classmate went because they needed to do a review on a play, and well get out of town. No problem, good kids both have been raised with some smarts, parents have no problem, this has been done before and responsibility has been proven.

They stop to get junk food on the way back and notice some boys from a public HS here in town. These gals attend a private school, but know the boys from families, ball games and such. They did not know the “other boy†giving them looks.

She also knows to call me anytime she needs, she did. She knew I had on-line classes and had dial- up. She called the operator from her cell phone and had the operator cut my connection allowing me to accept a call. Pretty smart, since I was cussing the fact the connection was dropped – I quickly got over that.

Parents were at the hospital with a friend and new baby couldn’t get them. Call Steve.

See the “other boy†had noticed her keys, identified what type of vehicle she was driving, and well some thoughts were being thought. He took note of the vehicle, went outside and waited; sure enough he was right and gave chase after a bit on the highway. She was taught how to drive that sports car. She had to prove she could really drive before she was turned loose.

See her friend is remembering the time the guy stalked her mom, the worker at the car wash took note of “how attractive†and looked in the glove box to get the address.

[Second Tip, she (the mom) now keeps the required registration in trunk and will just have to explain to an officer the reason if ever pulled over]

So I need to hang up and call the cops and give description of vehicle and get a plan. I call back and keep in contact with the passenger; they tried 911 and for whatever reason couldn’t get a connection.

They are instructed since they are so close to town and my exit to head straight for a Fire Station, there will be a cop and I’m on my way.

Works out just fine, LEO had no problem with her speeding, and running the red light…she did so in a “safe mannerâ€. Parents were contacted and all is well.

Except the “other boy†got more than a “come to Jesus meeting. Seems he took the parents car without permission, and the LEO really lit into him. I had to bite my lip as I wanted to “interject my thoughtsâ€. Parents of all had a meeting and the LEO agreed to NOT press charges as “kids will be kids, boys will be boys†and somehow we all pulled crap we wished we hadn’t.

Still the LEO handled it well, he figures the punishment of the parents will be severe, and perhaps the boy will straighten up and fly right. “You only get one break in this life, you just got yours…there will not be a second…you hear me son?†Yep I believe he heard the officer loud and clear!

Some personal thoughts:
The daughter and her friend were taught to be aware, and the driver (friend’s daughter) has taken a defensive driving course, I mean a “real defensive driving†course.

Cell phones are great, doesn’t always mean 911 will answer, so they had a back up plan, and yes if I had not been available there was another, and another..

It is a fact of life folks will notice key rings, car registration, pretty legs and short skirts. One does not cower and hide, one learns to be aware and put registration into trunk and read people when “being admiredâ€.

The car is insured, would break her heart but she was prepared to use it as a weapon if need. Parents might gripe for a minute, but sport cars are more easily replaced than daughters…or what could happen to them.

There was pepper spray in the vehicle, a 5 cell Maglight, and one of these days she may get around to taking that darn old wooden cane out of her car. She busted a toe some time ago and that pc of Hickory helped her hobble around for a bit…you know how some girls are about cleaning out a car * wink*

Did I mention she is very athletic, and may or may not have attended some other defensive classes.

[ blows one ego to be 170# and have a 5' 3" 105# "cutie" toss your butt onto the ground...and I'm the favorite adopted uncle...]
