I have a S & W Model 19-3 of indeterminate age with factory stocks. I intend to replace the stocks with a speedloader-friendly set (are Jordan Troopers good for this?) but I hear tell they redesigned the cylinder release for use with speedloaders. My cylinder release doesn't seem to give me any problems. What's the skinny? I have HKS speedloaders, but I also hear the Safariland speedloader is even better. Whatch y'all think?

The two things that help me are .... grips with adequate relief at top left to avoid fouling up on cases ..... and, I find the Safariland Comp1 is my ideal speedloader ... well, for carry. If size no prob then I think it's the Comp 3 that has an edge. They both discharge the rounds when shoved in .... no twisting to bother with like HKS, but some prefer having more to get hold of with a Comp3.

I used to make my grips for practical revo's so - not sure of best make to buy for max speed and lack of obstruction.

The cylinder release has never impeded my ability to use a speedloader with my 19-3 or 640-1, it is usually the stocks that are the problem.

If you are going to use your Model 19 in competition, go with Safariland speedloaders. They are a bit quicker to use unless you practice diligently with the HKS.

If you are using the 19 as a "carry" gun, I would recommend the HKS speedloaders. They won't dump their rounds if you drop a loaded speedloader, and the Safariland loaders are prone to do that. If you had to reload under adrenaline-pumping circumstances, you might find yourself to be all thumbs, in which case the firm grip of the HKS would be an advantage.

The cylinder release was redesigned as some people had complained of it's sharp edges cutting the thumb. So the top back half was beveled to prevent this.

I like the new release, and have put them on my older guns. Still, the old ones work well for speedloaders too.

I use comp III's for the range/competition. I carry COMP II's or HKS depending. I've broken equal numbers of compII's and HKS on the street so I cannot say that one is really more durable/reliable than the other. I like the HKS better for carry as it works better in my blade tech carrier. YMMV there. Have to say i carry a speedstrip more often than a speedloader in the summer though.

The miculek stocks are great for most folks and have plenty of clearance for speedloaders. They are full size stocks, and not as concealable as other kinds. Worth a look though.
