I picked up a box of 158 gr. Deep Curl's today and really can't see any difference from a Gold Dot. Did Speer just re-name the Gold Dot, a marketing angle maybe?

They renamed the hunting versions of the Gold Dot to differentiate it from the self defense bullets.

I loaded up some the same as I do my hard cast lead for my 44 mag and they did very well compared to the hard cast lead. I would think that they would be very devastating on small to medium game at most ranges and on large game at close ranges.

I also noticed they make a version for high powered rifle, but isn't that a production first for the Deep Curl? So considering they appear to be the Gold Dots for my .357, what is the cross over for high powered rifle, if any?

The press promo's I've read and brief reports in "Handloader" magazine, indicate that Speer in an effort to improve quality and produce an "inexpensive" alternative to a "Bonded" bullet, have adapted the plating process they've used for the "Gold Dot" bullets to production of the "Deep Curl" rifle bullets.
The renaming of the Gold Dot's is a marketing move.
The only problem I see is that they are replacing many of the previous line of "Hot Cor" bullets. Some of my favorite bullets are being replaced. And, at present, neither of the bullets are available, as production hasn't caught up.
Early reports are that the bullets are excellent. Accuracy and expansion characteristics match the advertising.....They are already using the bullets in their line of factory ammo at Federal.
Time will tell.....

I'll be doing other tests as the deep curl bullets become available through whatever outlets I can find. I plan on 9mm, 357, 40 S&W, 44 Mag, 45 acp Possibly 500 S&W. I now have a .243, my old .280, the '06 and a 45-70 SS. If they ever do a .224 bullet, my .223 AR will get tested.
The "deep curl" rifle bullets are simply re-named fusion bullets. Except the deep curl bullet is flat based, where the fusion had a slight boat tail.
