Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P Short Barrel 9mm

I wanted some Gold Dot 124gr +P ammo so I had my wife pick up 4 boxes of ammo at a shop by her office yesterday. Instead of the regular stuff they gave her the Short barrel ammo. They will not refund or exchange it.

I have a CZ 75 Compact with a 3.9" barrel. I know that the SB ammo is made for 2" barrels so, I am wondering, will this ammo come out of the 3.9" barrel to hot to be effective in a self defense application?

Is it just gonna be expensive practice loads?

Hm. Talk about a short shaft.

You can either fire just one round to see what it does at the range... hopefully it will make it out of the barrel ok.

Or put the whole lot up for sale to someone else at the range for exchange or cash.

It'll be fine, a few fps faster than in a shorter barrel and less muzzle flash. Keep in mind that with a semi-auto the chamber is included in the barrel length. So, your 3.9" barrel is actually more like 2.7" of rifled barrel that the bullet travels through.

it'll be perfectly fine. I don't think it was designed for 2" barrels since there are very few 9mm autos with barrels that short, maybe rorbaugh. I think they were probably designed around a 3" to 3.5" barrel, that's a pretty common range for small concealment guns. Also 9mm really isn't going to gain all that much velocity going from a 3.5" to a 3.9" barrel, it'll still be in spec.

Speer had in the upper RH corner of their web site - I think it was New Products some time back when they intro'd their then new .38 Special SB round with a 135 gr. Gold DOt. the chrono'd measurement of velocity as I
recall were
1 7/8" Bbl.= 875 FPS
2 1/8" Bbl. = 910 FPS
3" Bbl. - 980 FPS

I can't imagine the design of this bullet would have a velocity envlope so tight as to make it fragment at less than 100 FPS higher velocity.

and as another poster stated, your 3.9" Bbl. in the Semi-AUto included the
approx. 0.0 inch of chamber length so the length of the rifling is approx. 3"
you're good to go, enjoy.

oh, curious, how many rounds per box?

shoots out of my PM9 with no issues, I can't really see, or feel any difference either. Certainly no more accurate than the +P 124 grain GD..

just shoot um or carry um and forget about it. It is a good round..

This is the response that I received from Speer;

Tim: the "SB" determination is caliber dependent on barrel length. In 9mm, the SB is made for 4" guns, your wife did good selecting that ammo.
