Just wondering what everyone thought of the Speer Gold Dot (GDHP) ammo for .40 S&W. I purchased a box (50) round of 180gr of my girlfriend's uncle (retired Ohio State Patrol). He has a lot more available if I like them, and I was wondering how they perform. I plan to take a few out to shoot over the weekend but, I would only buy more if they are decent quality. Being OTP he claims they are the most accurate HP he has fired, although he also has several boxes of Hydra Shock. Comments?

probably one of the better brands. Its what rides in my 1911 on the nightstand.

I trust it, I have shot a lot of the bulk packaged .40S&W, it was marked, "not for LE, practice ammunition". It all shot great, very accurate, tests show very good and consistant expansion and penetration. Personal preference is the Speer over the Federal, but both are great ammunition.

I like the Gold Dot bullet.
Even from a short barrel Kimber 45ACP it expands well.

That Gold Dot expansion is picture perfect. I have +P 200 Gr Gold Dots in my 3" Kimber. I would not hesitate to use it or the HST rounds for self defense.

Local shop was out of .45ACP Speer Gold Dot loads........Good stuff sells of more quickly. It's a blessing among several others they had Remington 230gr 'Subsonic' JHPs which is my favorite HD load. I'm glad local gringos don't like slower weaker stuff.

I tried it out and man the stuff seems to be pretty intense (aka I know why this guy carried it for all those years. I think I'll pick up a few rounds (he has nearly 1000 worth of the Gold Dot's). It really seems like a good ammo.

He was not blowing smoke up your you know where! It is top notch quality self defense ammo! I bought 1,000 bullets to load up in my 9mm's and they perform great!

I own more Gold Dots in more calibers than anything else.

I don't have any experience with that load, but I do know that the 230 gr 45ACP load is one of the few on the market that expands reliably and beautifully out of a short barrel.

Sorry for getting off topic on this but the photo provided by M2 Carbine made me think about a DA showing a jury what some law abiding citizen shot some poor crack head with - not even allowed for use by the military.

Any thoughts or cases you know of where the type of ammunition used was brought into question? Any Ayoob fans know his thoughts on the matter (I ordered some of his book for Christmas by the way).

Thx, again sorry for changing the subject.

Any defense attorney would say that it is th same ammo used by multiple law enforcement agencies. I don't think the DA would try to make the case based on you using hollow point rounds.

not even allowed for use by the military.

It is not "Allowed" for use by the military because of those pansies at NATO!

I don't understand why we use less effective FMJ's in pistols and rifles when we can use the most amazing ammo fired out of tanks plans and ships? No sense at all IMO!

It says for self defense use right on the box and they sell it at my local store. What more do you need than that?

My local PD uses Gold Dot ammo. That's good enough for me.

I have Speer GD ammo for my G19, and have been searching my LGS's for some in .45 ACP. It's what our Sheriff's Dept. issues...carrying what's issued to your LEO's seems like a good idea!

If he has "a lot more available" at a good price, get all you can. I've gone through several thousand rounds (6000 - 8000 I'm guessing), all of them .40 S&W GDHP 180gr. Zero failures.
