Split brass Remington 760

No hot brass when shooting bolt. Maybe if. Shooting a hot barrel maybe. But nothing to do with this.

I don't have pump with me today

Did some shooting. factory coreloct the brass is not hot. 54.5 grains of IMR54.5 warm. Not hot like a 7400.

Bought some starline brass. Will not shoot in the pump. Dented primers. Put the same round back in 3 times, and would not shoot. Tried three rounds. small base sizing die, may be the answer, or just use different brass in this rifle. No issues with remington brass.

Those are the start of neck cracks. Usually doesn't happen on the second reload with good brass. Brass wasn't annealed properly by Remington could be a cause.

Brass is warm, but not hot in every manually operated action that I have experienced. I don't know why yours is hot?

I have also read elsewhere issues with lube in chamber. I did oil the oil, which I don't think I ever did before. I was tumbling brass. Now I am using contact cleaner. Time before I shot I used rubbing alcohol on last few shots. But since they didn't split every time, doesn't prove anything

Factory not hot, below max hand loads are warm. I am attributing that to heavier load or powder burn rate??

starline will not function-different issue.

I shoot my 760 pump in 308 Win and never had any trouble with it splitting brass, but it has a tight and short chamber. I have to use small base dies on my brass to get it to chamber again.
I always let my chamber set open between rounds to let it draft. Maybe that's why I don't remember hot brass after picking it up off the ground.
If I ejected it into my hand, yeah, I'm gonna get burnt. And it doesn't take a lot of shooting to heat it up.
You may be not remembering some details from the 1980s. That could throw your memories way off.

I sometimes eject into my hand sometimes ground. Not saying burning like a 7400 but hot. I leave the bolt open between shots to let it cool too

I've never used small base dies with remington brass, which is all I have ever shot, that I can remember. This is the first time with starline. I may simply just not use it in this rifle.

I am not sure what is going on with remington and reloading components. Not sure if they quit making them or just out of stock.

I have shot this gun a lot without issues. I did oil the lugs, which I have never done before. The brass was hot before that, but not splitting. I shot it this weekend no splitting. But it only split twice last time.

I've seen new factory ammo split on the initial firing. Reloaded 1x fired split on the firing. Mfg have been cutting out steps to save money for years. This is the main reason I started annealing to prevent this from having. Think about it, mfg only are required to make it hold together for the initial firing. So splinting out early does not surprise me. This is one reason ones go for premium brass and Mil brass, knowing they will get more reloads before it fails.

What are you seeing for shot impact on split cases?

Typically I use virgin brass for hunting loads. I am not shooting far, until now, and didn't worry about change in volume.

The brass that split was either factory ammo or purchased brass. Not sure.

I've never annealed. Have to look into it
