There aren't any downsides and there is no maintenance. A Trust is not similar to the corporate route in those aspects. A corporation can have an NFA item transfered to it, as an entity, and the officers can legally posses the item, but yearly fees and maintenance are an issue.Are there any downsides to that? If not, why not just go that route in the first place?
There is no reason not to go the trust route right off the bat. The only reason would be ignorance to the process, which is a great obstacle to overcome in the first place (when dealing with NFA items for the first time).
My CLEO told me that there would be no problem at all with him signing off, I just had to make an appointment. Rather than sending in mug shots, fingerprints, citizenship form and CLEO sign-off; I sent in a notarized copy of my Trust, the check and the Form 4.
