I am toying with the idea of buying a mosin nagant and turning it into a hunting rifle of sorts. If anyone else has done so i would grealtly appreciate the input, and if possible, maybe some pictures.

Any input would be appreciated.

p.s.

i dont wanna hear anyones crap about oooo its a piece of history, you cant do that -.-

The best way to kick start sporterizing a Mosin is to start with the barrel. Hack off a few inches and suddenly you're left with no front sight. Now that you've got no front sight, you've got no use for the rear one. At that point, you might as well drill and tap the receiver for a scope(and turn down the bolt handle), or pick up a scout mount. After that, why not pick up a new ATI stock for it? All of the sudden, you've got yourself a pretty handy rifle, without a 9 foot barrel, that is.

Tick Bite Supply has everything you'd need on this page. As a heads up, I've never ordered anything from TBS, I'm just linking so you know what kind of things I'm talking about.

This little guy is pretty good looking:

....or you could buy an M38 or an M44 and not worry about chopping the barrel. Just buy the rifle and go hunting. Couldn't be that much simplier.

True, however i would kinda like to do it for the sake of doing it if you will.

Another question,
is it possible to buy the alredy turned down bolts, and swith it in the the straight bolt? i imaginie it would be, unless there is some odd bolt interchanging rules that i am not aware of...

If you can find a used bolt from a 91/30 Sniper rifle then you could interchange them. The turndown was just meant to clear a PE,PEM, or PU scope.

Check out the Shotgun News article in the Aug 1 issue (I think).

It had a feature article on building a Mannlicher Sporter out of a Mossy.

Really nice!

a mosin is never ever going to reach the ease of use as a purpose made sporting rifle, not to mention balance. a savage or an old mauser action would probably suit your purposes better.
And please refrain from telling me what i can and cannot do. And It is a piece of history.

I didn't tell anyone not to do anything Sir.
I was mocking the whiney voices all of YOU people telling me what I CANT do.....

I don't see why people refuse to use the search function. Hell there are 3-4 topics ON THE FRONT PAGE about using/customizing a mosin nagant for hunting purposes. I am starting to think that every forum should just have a couple stickies that address "the best ak47" and "mosin nagants" then have mods delete every other topic that is made that are covered by the stickies.

Best bet is to just get one of the many that's already been cut. They can be had for next to nothing.

Straight bolt is going to be a problem if you want a receiver-mounted scope. The Darrell's scope mounts are another option for a scout-style setup. I would absolutely not go with the lesser quality mounts if you're taking the project seriously.

Huge +1. When I was a total n00b a Mosin was the first rifle I ever bought. I made the mistake of buying a scope + mount on fleaBay for a grand total of something like $30. Never even got to shoot the thing. The darn mount stripped right as I was installing. Hardly any pressure at all stripped the very soft aluminum.
I then got a Darrel's mount, and used it for years. Was great.

Lot$ and lot$ and lot$ and lot$.....
not realy, after reading the article i'd say the guy spent under $500, including purchasing the rifle. now he is a do-it-yourselfer and has the proper tools, machinery and fabrication skills to pull it all off.

i've built quite a few sporters, most on mausers actions but some of them on mosin actions, and i usually spend less or in the ballpark of a new factory sporting rifle but the final product stands out in the sea of generic remchesters at the range

Yeah, doing it yourself saves lots of $$$.... I'm a big fan of home built :D

Your problem here is going to be sighting; if you cut the bbl, you are going to lose the front site, so now you need to scope it. You can do that, but that can get funky. I would try to go to a few sites , and see what they can offer. 76254.net, or ' collecting the mosin nagant', or a few other sites.
About the only good way I can think of, is like mentioned above, get a m38, and just do a trigger job to that, and use it open sites. or find an old 91, cut the bbl yourself down to about 18 inches, and hopefully the one you got, allready has a turned down bolt, and the scope setup on the left side allready.

The only way to get an original turned-down Mosin Bolt is to get it off of a M91/30 Sniper model with an original scope.

These complete rifles are very expensive and true collectors items themselves, but you might get lucky and find one somebody took apart & sold for parts. I reccomend gunbroker for finding stuff like that.

Me and friend both hunt with ours. Drilled and tapped for a rail, mounted a scope and off you go.

The biggest thing is; did you get a good one or not? And only shooting it will tell. Both of ours will drive tacks.

Here is one, 25 bucks for bubbarized MN, $15.00 for yard sale BSA scope, 15 dollars for scout scope mount.

55 dollars for all, results with cast boolits, priceless.

there is a guy who will take your original mosin bolt and turn it down for you. The cost is like 45-55.

@palehorse, if you want to sell that rifle for 55 bucks let me know :D
