Hey everyone, can anyone give me some information on the mosin nagant ? Im going to ask my parents for one for christmas. Ive seen some threads on the mosin and decided to do some research (via youtube) and they look to be a fun, historical, and inexpensive gun! I understand there are various models and different configurations. Being it fires a popular, cheap caliber, it also looks fun to "plink" with. Any Info, tips, or stories, would be greatly appreciated!

-Thanks

that website has more than I've ever wanted to know about mosins. and I like mosins.

I don't know your firearm experience, but just make sure you know that 'plinking' is a relative term with this weapon. more like 'kabooming'.

very cool rifles with lots of history, so I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

It's a great little(?) gun. Cheap to buy, ammo is cheap, cleaning is easy. If your lucky you'll get one that looks like a tank rolled over it (like mine) that will make all the other nagant owners with "almost new" looking rifles jealous. They tend to shoot high (mine shoots about a foot high at 100 yards, front sight is smaller then normal). And remember about the corrosive surplus ammo, clean with hot water and soap/windex (what I use)/anything to get those nasty salts out.

What is this "plinking'' that you speak of? Not with a Mosin... do a search on youtube for Mosin, my fav is the guy in an indoor range with a bath towel folded over his shoulder. I especially like the sound wave rolling back to you off the back wall.

The first time I fired mine, the wife (with gun muffs on, 20 yards behind me) says "That isn't a rifle.. it's a damn cannon!" I bought a 1" rubber butt pad before I even fired it, still ended up with a "Mosin-bite" before 20 rounds.

Affordable though, I just bought one using my C&R FFl from Classic Arms, under $100 shipped with all the accessories, and an excellent rifle, 1942 Tula round reciever all matching except one force-match on the magazine floorplate, bright bore and good woodwork. Found a local source for spam can ammo, $5.49 for 25 Hungarian light ball surplus so can't complain.

I have to agree on the plinking = kabooming. I bought one and took some friends out to shoot it. Two of them each put 1 round in it and that was enough for them. One shot it while kneeling and it knocked him backwards. They all now refer to it as a cannon. The safety isn't easy to operate and as such its not ideal for hunting, but the price does over ride that as it is very affordable. It's a neat gun but I don't feel the need to shoot it much.

Get (at least) one! The kaboom just makes it more fun. And the sound is truly unique in my experience. Not so much loud as a very deep sound. Even other full power .30 cal rifles don't seem to have quite the same report. It must really have been something to hear a battalion of these guys going at it back in the day!

A limbsaver pad makes them gentle to shoot (don't bother with the cheaper pads - there is a big difference). It is no .22, but if a skinny 6'/165# guy can take it...

Mine have all performed well on paper. 4 moa in general and decently aligned sights with milsurp light ball. 91-30's will tend to shoot right without the bayonet mounted though because they were intended to be shot with it attached.

I'm always baffled by people who think a MN has heavy recoil. What have you shot before that you think the 762x54 round is painful? .22's? .223's?

The 762x54 has less recoil energy than a 30.06 and I don't know of any modern 30.06's in such a heavy rifle. To me, an MN feels about like a .308 - pretty mild to shoot.

Try shooting a 300 win mag or a 45-70 all day,or for that matter a 3 1/2 inch 12ga, and even these are mild compared to some. 7.62x54 is a kitten.
What's making it worst is the hard butt pate, get a padded end for the butt. (The gun, not yours!)

My M-44 has A LOT of BOOM! FLASH! with certain ammo, usually the "Heavy Ball" stuff.

Once made a guy shooting a .300Win Mag leave the range one day...he said "Your gun is TOO DAMN LOUD!"

Get one and get a limb-saver pad. As others have said, the round itself it's to bad but that damned metal plate on the back of it just kills my arm. I have a stand bet with all my friends, the first time they shoot it, for any rouind over the fifth they can shoot through it, I'll buy them a drink. I still haven't bought one yet :D

Go after a Finnish M39. Mosin action, but built to higher standards and more accurate. An M39 is a heavier rifle, therefor will not beat you up quite as much as the Commie counterparts. You can shoot it all day long.

M44s are really cool and fun for shytes n' giggles, but I do not find them particularly enjoyable rifle to shoot.

You might also a Swiss K31? Wonderful, very accurate rifles. Ammo prices have come down as well.

+1 on getting a Finn. Picked one up at a gun show some years ago for $70. I don't think you can touch one for five times that now. They make most (not all) of the Russian ones look like shotguns (shooting pattern wise).

Great gun, great gun, great gun. I have both 91/30 and M44.

The 91/30 is a lot of fun to clean and accurize, cheap ammo either way. The carbine M44 shorter will be fun to plink, but won't do much for improving your technique. I purchased the 91/30 first, and made it into a 1 moa shooter, with a nice scope. The M44 I made into a plinker with a super clean stock (several hours in the back yard with a gas soaked rag, removing cosmoline) that looks like something from the drill parade. (glossy lacquer finish). I have less than 250 bucks invested in both, but lots of hours of pleasure.

I have tweo 91/30s now and have owned about all the variations at one time or another.

If they can find a good condition M28 or M39 Finnish version of the M/N, by all means beg them for it!
These are the very best shooting Mosins you can find!

The Mosin Nagant is one of the funnest gun I owned until I had to trade it in to pay for another gun. I bought mine at an online store, I forget what it was, but I only paid $89 for it! It shoots about 4-6" high at 100 yards. Yes, it kicks like a mule and sounds like a cannon. It's easy to clean, easy to handle and lots of fun. You can't go wrong with a FUN rifle like that! Enjoy it this Christmas!!

I love my M-44, they don't seem to be around any more but I would strongly suggest you look around for an M-44 before you buy a 91/30. The 91/30 is good too spend a tad extra and get the Hex model if you get a 91/30.

I don't know about the Finnish models but without even looking into it I can say they are likely much more expensive than the Russian ones. 91/30s are still around for right around $100 or less.

You may want to buy an extra shoulder while you're at it if you intend to plink with the Mosin Nagant. Either that or forgo getting the rifle and have Mike Tyson smack you around for a bit. The bruising will be pretty much the same. :what:
