I think it was much more successful as a sporter than as a military rifle. Single loading a five shot magazine is not a huge disadvantage for hunting.
I don't know. During the Spanish American was there were some units still using trapdoor Springfields. I am guessing that they would have happily traded those in for Krags with a 5 round magazine (and smokeless powder!).
 
I so want one of these. I have had the pleasure to shoot several and each one is smooth as silk. One will be mine some day.
The rifle looks beautiful and an awesome acquisition.
 
I got to spend the afternoon rummaging Col. Coopers Vault and found a large stash of 30-40 and a couple well used Krag bubba carbines with ghost ring sights. Was told that and the M1 Garand were his Armageddon choices . I bought one out in Prescott valley a year later. Third up from bottom, no it does not have a ghost ring , I like the Buffington Carbine sight !
