What I have: 12ga and 20ga Sportsman 58, checkered stock/fore-end, duck/quail engraved receiver. These are the guns I grew up with and still shoot infrequently.

12 ga has: 3 barrels: skeet/26"/ribbed, mod/28"/bead sight, full/30"/ribbed.
20 ga barrel is: skeet/26"ribbed.

20ga has been repaired. The action bar broke and thus split the fore-end. A 2-piece action bar was installed. The checkered fore-end was epoxied. Also have a new fore-end (without checkering).

Busted clays with both last weekend and they shoot great. The 2pc action bar seems slightly rougher than I recall with the 1pc, but functionally is fine. Should I get a 1pc action bar or does it make much difference?

I'm thinking of keeping just the skeet barrels -- which have worked just fine for clays and doves.

If I buy an 870 with 18" barrel for HD, can I use the Sportsman 58 barrels on the 870 for field shooting?

If I buy an 870 with 26" barrel for field, can/should I cut a Sportsman barrel to 18" for HD with the 870? (Most seem to have poor results after cutting a barrel, so I'm hesitant.)

Should I just sell the barrels that I don't have a use for, or keep them for some reason? (If I sell 2 barrels, it will pay for an 870.)

In 10-20 years, these guns will get handed to another family member -- but there are no shotgunners. Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated!

58 barrels will work on an 870. The reverse is not true.

I'm no fan of cutting barrels. OTOH, selling one of your barrels should be more than enough to pay for an 18" 870 barrel.

A 58 with a Modified choke 28" barrel should be a great field gun.

Dunno about the one piece bar. Yours may just need some work polishing.

HTH....
