Sportsmans Warehouse coming soon in Tucson metro area

For all of you near the Tucson Marana area I just got a great email message from Ed Urbanek the Real Estate marketing director of Sportsmans Warehouse.

I asked if there were any plans on opening a store down this way cause we need one.

His reply;

Thanks for your interest in Sportsman's Warehouse. It just so happens that we nearly have a signed deal in Marana to service the Tucson market and should be open mid-year 2005 in plenty of time for the fall hunting seasons

A true blessing for Tucsonians. This place is pretty close to Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops. It has plenty of reloading stuff as well as hunting and fishing gear.

They put one in here in Missoula a few years ago, and they sell a lot of guns, but I can't think of any independent shop they've driven out of business. They do not sell used guns, so the other good stores are okay there, if a store is worth going to before SW comes to town, they will be able to stick it out.

Not many here. The used gun market is strong here. Sportsmans only deals in new weapons from what I can tell.

The bonus is the gear. We dont have alot of reloading options and the places that do sell hunting gear is limited.

Here in TX, they have a large selection of guns. The prices seem somewhat fair, maybe a little on the high side with some brands. I think its like that where ever you go though. I will say that their ammo prices are generally a couple bucks higher than the other places I go.

They have reloading gear, holsters, all sorts of stuff. I do like to go and browse from time to time.

+1 for the real value being the reloading supplies and gear. The north Phoenix location has cards from a dozen local gun shops on their gun counter and freely recommends shopping at the smaller stores for used guns and any equipment they don't carry or happen to be out of - like Wilson magazines and Kimber .22 conversion kits.

I went in to SW today to pick up an 8 pounder of H335 and came out with a 4 5/8" Single Six convertible (.22lr and .22 mag) and 5000 rounds of .22 ammo. I didn't realize I'd forgotten the powder until I got home. :banghead:

I guess I have to go back now....

Haven't seen them drive any independent gunshops out of business here in Utah. Cabelas is due here next year and I don't expect them to drive anyone out of business either. Probably offer a lot of comprtition to Sportsman's Warehouse, though!

A Sportsman's Warehouse was put in Lewisville, TX, the city I work in and I've really enjoyed it. When I first went into the store and saw their reloading department I thought I heard angels singing. It may not be the best in reloading and gun maintenance inventory but it way ahead of anything else around here. I'm very happy to have them.

The Bass Pro Shop at Grapevine Mills just takes a general stab at reloading supplies and equipment.

When the Sportsman's Warehouse opened up they handed out $10 off coupons for purchases over $50. They were good for first 1-2 months the store was opened. I think I used 3 or 4 of those coupons on reloading and other supplies.

WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!! It's a LOOOONG drive to any decent gunshop from up here in Marana, and the closest place selling ammo is Wally World, at least 30 minutes away. A real gunshop is MUCH farther.
There are NO dealers open up here this place would drive out of business, and the closest shop is Jensen's, a very overpriced shop/indoor range, and the range is the ONLY indoor on the Northwest side, so they won't have to worry about going out of business.
Wow, that's great news - ordering bulk bullets over the internet was going to cost a fortune in shipping, and I am really enjoying this reloading gig. Having a bulk supplier nearby will be AWESOME!
Have to go tell Mrs. Armoredman we can buy her SKS ammo cheaper sometime this year!

FWIW . . . through the end of February, Discover Card is offering a "5% cash back" rebate on any purchase made at a sporting goods store. (If you have a Doscover card, you still have to sign up for this free program at their website.)

I looked under participating providers, and Sportsman's Warehouse (as well as Oshman's, Academy, and a couple of local gun retailers) was listed.

They recently opened one up 5 min from my house, and my wife can't keep me out of there. Hopefully they WILL run a few of the local shops out of business, given the service I've gotten at them, but so far, no luck. Really, a lot of the items they carry, the locals don't have anyway, and I'd be ordering over the internet or from a catalog.

Since they opened in Phoenix, I've been shopping there for my camping supplies. Not sure if they were directly related, but Popular Outdoor Outfitters recently closed most of their locations. Oh well, they never had what I was looking for most of the time anyway.

I love the store in ORegon that i go to..There prices arnt great but they have a big selection of stuff..I agree with Stickjockey about there safety with the guns at least in the Portland store.
But i did buy my Ruger p97dc there..

We'v had one in the Salem OR area for a couple yrs now. None of the local gun shops have went out of business(that I know of) but their prices have gotten much more reasonable. One was selling various bullets for up to $5-6 a box over Midways price. It actually paid to pay the shipping. Gun prices have dropped to around the same level as the Warehouses,sometimes a few bucks lower.If one of the small shops have what I'm looking for at the "new" price levels,they'll get my business. Reloading stuff seems to have went up a little since opening but its still cheaper than buying online and you'v got it in hand NOW! Still trying to get my paycheck direct deposited there.

Sportsman warehouse

Sportsman warehouse opened in North Phoenix - can't remember the exact date - since then two small chains have gone under or closed their Phx locations - Arizona Sportman and Popular. I dunno the specifics for each but it would seem logical that with all the cars I see in front of the Waehouse location that it was related.

The store is nice and it is comfortable to shop in.

I like some of their ammo prices. If they don't stock what you want - they have shown no interest in ordering it. ( I wanted a Crimson trace LG305 - they stocked the LG205, no they said they could not get the other; same deal on ammo).

The prices on their guns are higher than the small store where I have purchased most of my firearms.

I miss the other two stores, Sportsman Warehouse seems too Walmart like.

I rate SW in Lewisville as a good place to shop. If they hurt local business I can't see how. They maket to different sectors. They have a pretty good layout of camping equipment. Prices are higher then I would like to pay but then again they have what I wnat when I want it.

I think they play off well against BPS which really is just a "pretender" when it comes to marketing to the shooter. I give staff at SW a much higher grade than BPS staff in the friendliness department.

Arizona Sportsman is struggling because the owner is an idiot - anyone who puts used Smith 64s on the shelf for $350 needs a little help mentally. I used to work for him, and he's a nice guy, but greedy. AS used to have shops all over AZ and one in TX, but now are down to the two in Tucson, I think. Oh well, I just shoot at the range, and buy occaisional 7.62x54r styff there...

Armoredman is correct about the az sportsman,i worked there in the middle/late 90's.It was great in the beginning but after a while the price's just got stupid.There's stiil a az sportsman in mesa,last time i went there they wanted 4 bucks a box for wolf buckshot/slugs.

I too have been less than impressed with Arizona Sportsman AKA Jensen's Arizona Sportsman for decades. In the 80's I'd visit the wholesale sporting goods place next door. A few times I wandered next door to Jensen's and was uniformly treated as if it was a waste of their time to serve me. Well it was, with those vibes I rarely wanted to linger and buy anything. In that time frame I spent about 20 thousand on firearms and related equipment, I doubt Jensen’s got $20 of it.
