Sportsmens Warehouse

I would bet the closed list either falls into a poor demographics for the companys target buyer, strong competition with the other big 5.

The SW store in Lacy WA is only a few miles from the bigger and better Cabela's store. Odd that they're keeping that one open.

I'm disappointed that they're closing the Sioux Falls store. I always liked Sportsman's Warehouse.

There's also a Scheels in Sioux Falls, as well as a large local gun shop, and a Cabela's an hour away. I guess I'm not too surprised, since it's not a huge market here, but it's still sad.

The store in Nampa ID is only a few miles from the store in Meridian ID (both a few miles from here).

It's unfortunate, but not surprising. These stores serve the same market.

Not sure about the others.

I hope SW can make a go of it in the future.

The only TN store will be Chattanooga. In my area, Bass Pro is their dominant competition along with Dicks Sporting Goods. But the closest BP is about 2 hours drive away (with stores in Nashville, Sevierville, and Atlanta). That makes shoping at BP an event rather than something I would routinely do if I need something. Cabelas was going to build a big GA store and then opted out of it. I would have liked that.

I suspect BP killed the Memphis store. It was an old store.

I'm not familiar with the competition and demographics in Roanoke VA. It is a pretty new store. Lexington KY is very simlar to Chattanooga in terms of competition and they're keeping that store.

Texas will only have one SW. They closed one last year in the Dallas area. I suspect BP, Cabela's, and Academy are killing SW in Texas.

Sorry to see the Pittsburgh store closing; hasn't been here all that long. Bought my son's graduation present there, and often stopped by to pick up a box of ammor or two. So much for that.

Good, ever since I discovered how incredibly arrogant the management of the Midvale store is, as well as the regional manager, and how they back up the abuse of customers by two particular managers of the gun department, I stopped giving those creeps a single penny. The minute Sportsmans Warehouse opened on sunday, they started going downhill. It's interesting to see that their arrogance wasn't JUST in the management of the gun counter and the store, that it permeated the entire corporation as they built too many stores too fast and lived beyond their means by taking on massive debt to build too many stores (known in the industry as "pulling a kmart"). SW is getting exactly what it deserves. Most of us in the south valley have gone a few miles south to Cabelas where the gun counter management guys are actually polite.

Closing? Nah, they are just repositioning. They are closing stores that aren't profitable and opening others. Carson City has a new one going in and the work is still going on. The trim color was just painted this last week and lots of us are looking forward to not having to go to Reno for supplies!

While I don't see Cabelas being in the same shape as SW, they are giving every indication that they are looking to walk away from the NJ location even though the structure is almost complete. that will cost them millions.

I went in, Olympia WA

Not only was stock low, but the assistant Mgr. was less than helpful. I wanted to look at a 629 and I did, then I asked to examine the 29. He said "same exact gun, different color why do you need to see it." Of course, each gun is a machine unto it's own and they have different grips etc, and turns out very different actions.

Then I asked to look at a Glock and he reached for a Springfield. I asked if he had a 686 (which was on the wall, and he grabbed a Taurus 605.

Now with Mgt. that is so completely ignorant and downright rude, it does not suprise me that theygot bought out. I was gunna buy from him until he said "well, you gunna buy it or not..." We walked away in disbelief. There were 2 whole customers in the hunting section and 4 employees, so its not like they were slammed like Cabelas gets.

Oh well, hopefully they will revamp from mgt. down and give a gun and hunting knowledge test to their people. I could go through and name every gun, action, caliber, ammunition and accessory off the top of my head as a customer. I guess I need to go into the BIZ.

The store in Visalia CA is brand new! They haven't finished building the shopping center it is in yet. As for being too close to competition, there is not another store like it that sells guns and reloading gear for more than 50 miles in any direction. There are only a few mom and pop shops in that area. I liked the store and was hoping for good things from it.
The shooters in this area are used to having to do group buy's to get inexpensive supplies. It would be nice to be able to browse a store and maybe pick up a new powder or tool to try without having to plan months ahead.

The Rogers Ar is where I used to buy most of my reloading stuff.. Last friday I was there and not a single friggin 22 was in stock. i bought all the LMP primers there (700) and left. May I will wait for the clothing blowout to come but I won't even bother to look for anything else there....

Dang it...

Sportsman's Warehouse deal falls through
Layoffs » Midvale company closes 23 stores, sells 15 others.
By Mike Gorrell

The deteriorating economy has drastically altered plans for a Canadian co-operative to buy 80 percent of Sportsman's Warehouse, a Midvale-based outdoors company.

Instead, Sportsman's Warehouse is closing 23 stores in 17 states and selling 15 other stores in the northern United States to UFA Co-operative Ltd., based in Calgary.

While its four Utah stores - in Midvale, Provo, St. George and Riverdale - will remain open, about 150 Utah employees are among 2,000 people losing jobs companywide.

And the blood-letting might not be over.

"I need to find a new bank, and a new credit line, and I probably need to identify a new equity source of about $30 million, and I need to do it in a short time," Sportsman's Warehouse Chairman Stuart Utgaard said Wednesday.

"It's a terrible time and a terrible situation," he added. "Let's just say we didn't get our share of the bailout money."

Utgaard said the store closures and sales will reduce company debt by more than $100 million. He expressed hope those two actions will allow Sportsman's Warehouse to "go forward as a viable entity" with 2,300 employees at 29 remaining stores.

But he was far from certain about that Wednesday, saying he was "trying to salvage things from the past four months when UFA had control of our company."

In November, the cooperative started in 1909 by Canadian farmers announced plans to buy a majority interest in Sportsman's Warehouse. UFA already had made an investment in the Midvale company and hoped to complete the purchase by now. But because of "the continuing deterioration of the North American economy," UFA spokeswoman Natalie Dawes said, "UFA has decided not to pursue the acquisition under the original terms."

For Sportsman's Warehouse, Utgaard said that meant "UFA failed to complete their equity infusion, missing three closing dates." Meanwhile, banks stopped lending money, suppliers stopped shipping goods and company inventories - the basis for obtaining credit - shrunk by $120 million.

"Today we find ourselves in a very difficult spot," he added. "It breaks our hearts to lay these people off because they all have mortgage and rent payments, car payments and have to buy groceries."

UFA President Dallas Thorsteinson said the co-operative is taking possession of the 15 Sportsman's Warehouse stores in exchange for its original loan. The outlets in Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, Montana and North Dakota "align nicely with our western Canadian geography and distribution routes.

"We cannot predict the future for Sportsman's Warehouse," he added, "but we are certain the acquisition of these specific locations is good news for the growth and sustainability of UFA."

I went yesterday. The employees I talked to said they were informed this week that the store would be closing in as little as 60 days.

There's a few things marked down, but so far everything is at the 10% discount level (except ammo - no discount). I went ahead and picked up 2 Pelican 1500 cases for the heck of it, because I knew they'd be gone before they raised the discount rate again.

"...we didn't get our share of the bailout money."
:banghead:
With management holding out their hands for government money, no wonder their prior decisions lead them to the point that they find themselves in today. With the current post election frenzy, they should have recouped all their red ink into the black.

Todays News in Oregon

In the business section of The Oregonian ,Portland's local newspaper, the story reads " Got a Sportsman's gift card? You're out of Luck"

Apparently the following 4 local stores were purchased by UFA of Calgary Canada are no longer going to honor Sportsman's Gift cards. The SW Washington / Oregon Locations are in Vancouver, WA and Salem, Bend & Portland Oregon. There is a store down in Medford OR that was not bought out by UFA and is still honoring the cards. Medford is about 5hrs outside of the Portland Metro area.

Luckily I already used the Gift card I got for Christmas. Others in the area were not so lucky including store employees. If the new ownership does not come out with a statement saying they are going to honor the cards I will no longer shop at Sportsman's Warehouse in support of my fellow sporting enthusiasts who are getting screwed. I wonder if they are redeemable online?

I went to my SW today here in Minn.and found out all stores are closing in the upper Midwest, final closing date will be around mid May.
They haven't been stocking anything in the gun dept. for month's, I knew
something was up.
Too bad, really nice store when supplies were good, hate to see them go.

And we have a crappy Gander Mt. that is still running, go figure.:(

Hmmmmmm...

No mention of the Thornton, CO store. Maybe it will make the cut. Their reloading shelves have been getting barer and barer - few bullets, almost no primers, and powder on a catch as catch can basis. The pistol board was a little thin last week too. Maybe they will stay and recoup. One can only hope.....

San Antonio's SW at L1604/281 is going too. I didn't find anything worth buying at the "Liquidation" sale where you can save a whoppin 10% off of firearms accessories (not guns or ammo tho). Shelves were bare long before they started the sale. Not eager to give money to a chain that is dumping my city's employees and fleeing the area either for that matter.
