How much would a spot weld on the side of a USGI frame weaken it. There is a 3/8x1.5 in stainless steel ID tag, spotwelded just ahead of the serial # and the slide stop hole. There are about 8 very small pinpoint welds that were just enough to hold the tag in place, but it came off quite easily. You can also see correspoonding marks on the opposite side of the frame, small little fisheye's, probably where the other electrode contacted. I just need to know if its ok to shoot. And by the way, I have no clue what the tag was put there for. ??

Ahead of the slide stop hole, you say?
That puts it out on the dust cover which is not a stressed part.
You are safe to shoot.
I don't know what state of temper the spots might be, they might cause a crack from recoil... or prevent it.

Actually, they start right at the hole. The first spot is right underneath the hole.

I agree the frame is very likely not harmed.

I'd just shoot it.
At the very worst, it might eventually crack, but until or if it does, no harm no foul.

It is not a safety concern, as the frame is just something to contain the parts and hold onto.

The barrel & slide is what holds all the pressure.

Are we talking about another 1911 than the one mentioned in this thread?

Yikes! If so, there is no point in further discussion as even possession of that frame would be a federal crime.

I'm going to close this until I hear from the OP that this is, or is not the case.

We do not condone nor discuss illegal activities at THR.org.

Update: CALL91145 informs me that he has a different gun with this kind of damage. Very interesting! I've never seen one like that, ever, and here he's got two!

When he gets some pictures together so we can see the affected area, I'll reopen the thread.
